I would like to express my concern about what is happening in the ski patrol department at Mount Washington. None of us should feel safe skiing at a mountain that fires it's most experienced and respected avalanche controllers and patrollers without due process after they have raised safety concerns.
Freshound said it is best on Feb 13th. The park is weak. If you are going to charge prices similar to big resorts then start putting more effort into the terrain park. Mt Washington is a sub par mountain when compared to others and it doesn't have to be.
Love the anger. Has mount wash. got you all on the pay cheque or have just never skied anywhere else. I suppose if you are a dumb ass redneck who knows nothing about how other professionals run their hill then Mt Washington Rocks!!! but to any of us who skied at other resorts, all we can do is shake our heads and laugh. If you don't get the joke then there is no amount of rational or logic I can present to you. Because you are right, if I don't like the nonsense at mt wash I can just save my dollars and go elsewhere. Brilliant business plan. I can't wait for the lawsuits to finish piling up so that Intrawest can swoop in. I love the island
Rule #1. Never say anything bad about the mountain. If the weather report is not accurate there is a reason for it.....they want you up there. If it's too gross to ski or board at least you'll buy lunch...or a bumper sticker!
The terrain park is weak. They only just got the whole big jump line up in the last week, and it's still puny. Isn't the big air in a couple of weeks? Where is the progression? They need to put more priority on park if there is no pow to ride. I'm extremely unhappy when I go up to find ice on the off-piste, and a small, tame terrain park that has had no cat work anywhere. I don't think it's the park crews fault because they seem to be in there for a large part of most days fixing up lips. Obviously they can't hand dig those jumps, the cats need to be in there more. I can't see this happening anytime soon, since they can barely groom the regular terrain.
I understand machinery can have the occasional breakdown (like the one beside the main parking lot on Sunday) but don't they have like 4+ Snowcats? All of them should be running non-stop during non-ski hours. Especially with the $800 early bird passes! Whistler charges like $150 less after tax and they have way more terrain, a village, multiple lodges, way more lifts, and good terrain parks. Mount Washington has been continually bumping their prices with no added benefit to the rider.
Last time I checked, the green chair and bunny hill had no problems, certainly none requiring a six figure investment, which was actually more of a downgrade. I remember the green chair was sort of hard to get on/off as a kid because it was a fixed grip, and the rope tow was sort of hard to ride with a snowboard. The magic carpets only compound these problems. Kids aren't going to know how to get on/off of lifts, so when they crash getting off the hawk they're going to take out 5 other people instead of just their partner as they did on the green chair. Kids are going to have to wait longer to ride since the carpets move at a pace similar to running up the hill, and the rider has to make 2 connections to get to the top. If my memory is correct neither the green, or the rope tow took this long. The magic carpets were a total waste of money. Their one benefit is weather coverage, but people are already wearing snow jackets and pants, did they really need more protection from the elements? Especially more protection, in a low wind treed area >:(?
My last complaint are those stupid orange fences and signs. Who puts a slow area above and below a terrain park? Some of the fastest people on this mountain spend whole days riding just the park. The beginners are the ones who need to be safely routed. I would be satisfied if there was at least one way down for the park riders that wasn't a slow zone, capped with chicanes. The chicanes just turn into icy ruts and are more a nuisance than an effective measure, since cut lines are easy to ride.
Everybody should start slow speed fake crashing into the gates and signs, in protest. It's a soft landing trust me, just don't haul full speed into them, The poles are bamboo and the fence is like a safety net. Maybe the mountain will get the picture if they have to replace the fences like twenty times in one day. Me doing it alone isn't enough.
Those no jumping signs bug me just as much. The only place they don't have them is in the terrain park, but I can see them being put in there pretty soon. I have yet to see a crash caused by people jumping into other people off rollers, why are these signs necessary.
I've got a couple reminders too
- If you can't drop in to the steep section at the top of the boom don't. Either take the more gentle slope towards the blue chair, or stick to the front-side of the mountain.
- Clear the step-up landing after shocker, stop on the sides not in the middle.
- People riding the whole jump line without stopping have right of way. Not those who drop in after stopping between jumps.
- Wait your turn at the top of the park, everybody wants to drop, don't budge you little squirts.
- It is perfectly normal to clap when somebody busts 7's, doubles, or any other tricks that you like.
- If you get snaked don't get all confrontational, you're the one who left too much space in between riders.
On a more positive note the mountain has
- Free cold water and cups
- Friendly lift staff(Except one who's name starts with N)
- Good cleaning crew in the cafeteria
- Pretty good views on a clear day
- Lord of the rings like sunrises when it's cloudy
You need to brush up on what you know about the mountain. Yes, it is a melt freeze hill they groom the mountain in two shifts a night. Melt/freeze takes two to three times as long to get an acceptable product hence less grooming on these nights. The beginner terrain is always groomed last in the morning and it would be great to have fresh grooming during the day but even though the snow has warmed and then refrozen during this time putting a groomer on the hill during operating hours is extremely dangerous. And above all being a coastal mountain is the best because of the varied snow conditions at anytime during the day. Why not talk to a groomer and get the real story on how they do their jobs and the challenges they face with constant changes in snow conditions and providing an enjoyable ski experience for all mountain users. I bet you'll be surprised at what you learn.
In response to previous reviewer, on Superbowl Sunday I skied the mountain all day and had a blast. By 11:00am it was sunny the rest of the day and the snow softened up. Yes, it was a little icy in the morning but this is a coast mountain. Ice happens. If you can't handle working your edges a bit, you're in the wrong place. Remember, pray for pow and keep shredding.......

Classic Mount Washington

If you don't appreciate having a local mountain, which you should feel privileged to have because it's such a decent mountain and in your own back yard, then move elsewhere, your business isn't needed. What's the big problem with any of what you said, it's awesome up here. So have fun.

I pay a substantial amount of money to enjoy a ski experience. IF the provider of that ski experience (the resort) is not capable of delivering what could be deemed industry norms then I, and the countless others who cannot be bothered, have every right to register a complaint. Local users argument is the classic position of "don't like it go somewhere else" that has led the mountain into offering a very poor ski experience for the average day user. Unplowed parking lots, disorganised liftlines, reheated gross Sysco chemical food and poor grooming strategies are all easily dealt with, but in the fifteen years I have been a passholder I have witnessed no real improvements. I really don't personally care, in fact I would prefer if no one but pass holders used the hill, more pow. Hopefully, everyone else will go touring or to the ok or Whistler and will leave the powder to us locals who expect nothing and are happy to get it.
