This whinging and moaning is just symptomatic of the age we live in where everyone expects instant everything. Mount Washington is a real mountain for real mountain lovers. If you want corporate condos and plastic villages go to Whistler. The skiing is great there. But Mount Washington has what it has. It's a great enthusiastic mountain with an amazing snow record. It's not a big destination resort and I only found it from here in the UK because my son taught there, so it doesn't have the income. The staff are great and there's some really great terrain for all levels. Recognise it for what it is and try to remember in this season when so many North American areas struggled for snow that we are in a sport that relies on bad weather. Work it out. That may cause problems!

Comparing Whistler to Mt Washington is ridiculous. I went to Whistler for the first time this year... it was absolutely amazing! Out of this world. They have about 7 x the amount of available terrain, and obviously much higher elevation. This is a world wide known mountain with tons of event and media coverage. Have any of you who are complaining stopped to think about how expensive it is to run a mountain? Clearly not. Whistler has way more resources to make the money, to pay the staff, to open on time, etc. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. If you've been skiing Wash for so long you'll know that, by April, no one is going but season's pass holders. Which means... no day pass sales... no income! They do what they can. The staff up there love the mountain, and they love sharing that experience with the people who are able to make it up there. It is absolutely insulting that people come on here and rant like they are being ripped off. Here's your other option: no local mountain. So quit your bitching or go away, because there isn't much choice, and I'd rather have a mountain then not. Oh, and to those people complaining about prices. Plan ahead, buy your tickets ahead of time and receive a notable discount on the cost. And if you fail to plan ahead... don't come on here bitching about the prices you paid because you didn't look for the most economical option in the first place. To Mount Washington and staff: Thank you for another amazing season! There was some insane weather, so much snow, absolutely sick powder days, and the backside was mind blowing. All the staff I talked to on the mountain were great, and I look forward to seeing many familiar faces next year! Have a good summer.... I'm already looking forward to next season. Thanks again :)

I just got out of the hospital after 4 holes in my skull from a slow fall on the Sunrise run on Dec 29 / 2012. The run was groomed until just above the East Spring road, where it was a mess from not being groomed as the upper portion was, it was frozen, I hooked a ski and fell. I have skied up there since 1982 and found the grooming over that time horrible. Saying they get lots of snow is true, but there is time from 4 pm till 800 am, and it does not snow every day. a very disappointed 21 yr pass holder

Re: Ticket Correction Prices are way out of wack compared to the amount of vertical you get, and the poor service at Washington. A 5 day edge card at Whistler works out to $71, and a 10 day is $68. At Washington a six pack ticket is $68? Really?? You should compare apples to apples. Just got back from 7days at Whistler over spring break with my family. 20 to 40 cms of snow every day and most of the mountain was open by 11 am. (that never happens at Washington). After the bad experiences we've had at Washington, and the great at Whistler and Mt Baker we won't be back. Clean up your act Washington. I guess you don't need customer satisfaction when you are the only game in town.

The reason Mt Wash experiences delays in opening is they get quite a large amount of snow. You have probably noticed this. It is the white stuff piled up alongside the access road. The big yellow machines are the ploughs. They move the white stuff out of the way so you can zoom about on top of the powder on your fat skis. Nowhere else has to deal with snow in these quantities, nowhere in Canada, nowhere in Europe. Just nowhere anywhere. It's one of the reasons Mt Wash is quite well known. It takes an age to clear avalanche danger from Mt Wash for a few reasons; partly the massive snowfall, partly the terrain, and partly the wind and weather. It is simply not safe to send a patroller out throwing bombs around when he or she can`t see what is above him/ her in the cloud. In terms of lift pass prices, again, they are charging a reasonable rate given the massive costs they have to cover. If you don't like paying it, either buy the early bird pass or get some touring gear. One of the main reasons Canada is an expensive place to ski is the liability problem, and all of us bear some of the responsibility for creating a society in which businesses have to carry insanely high insurance premiums to protect themselves. If you don't like the prices, move to Europe, where you will find that in bounds avalanches are not uncommon, nor are fatalities in them, yet even so people don't sue ski areas but accept the fact that they are scooting about on a snow covered mountainside and that they are therefore participating in a sport which carries some inherent risk. As for these so called die hard powder skiers.....what on earth are you doing at a ski hill of any description anyway? Learn something about snow safety and go ski touring. Ah well, nearly marmot season, so at least the whining will be about something else soon, that'll be refreshing.

There must be a reason why so many people are 'whinging'. One time I drove all the way up with family for whom I had bought 6-pack tickets only to be told at the top there was nowhere to park and I was turned around (I checked the website prior to leaving, and there was no sign at the bottom), unable to use 2 of the six pack tickets because of this - I was told that I couldn't even get a credit for the following season. I have never skied anywhere else in Canada, the US or Europe when the lifts have been delayed to open because of too much snow. Yes, the lifties are paid minimum wage put the execs are paid top dollar. The lifties I have no beef with, but the whole structure of the resort needs to change from one that is is solely interested in maximum returns for minimum outlay to one that actually cares about customer service.

A good friend of mine was stuck on the base of the mountain in the "Mount Washington ski bus" the day of the white out (20th). Owner of the bus company said it was the first time ever the mountain had not notified the bus before departure about the mountain not opening. OK, weather cannot be changed. Lack of trained personal (ie av. control) can never be up to par to some large resorts, and legitimate concerns of safety should never be overlooked. However, customer service should be paramount. Wash seems to be lacking this... I was surprised to hear nothing was offered in terms of compensation. No voucher or discount on lift, teck shop, or even food. My girlfriend told me of a story of her being stuck on the 'sea the sky' highway with Whistler/Blackcomb employees walking from car to car handing out free lift tickets. Every business has a bottom line to look out for. Not saying Wash should start handing out free lift tickets to all that don't get their way. However, something should be done in a situation like this. Throw em' a bone here!! Do something to make them want to give it another try. We need these new people to the mountain so I can get my new chair or groomer next season to keep me amped for another. We as skiers/boarders have loyalty to our local mountain. This will change Washington.... Many will talk the only way they know how... with their feet.

Time to quit the bitching. They're doing the best they can, and the terrain is in good shape. I'm up 4 times a week and there's more than enough almost always open, and if it is closed it's usually pretty obvious why. Time to consider expansion. How about the east side of outback bowl? Why not open some runs there and put a lift in? Could even dig out a road through the top of the current outback around copper glades to let the intermeds get over there...

Ski the Sunrise on monster days when it's all shut down. There are some good lines down that side. Really good. Oh and quit yer bitchin. You expect them to crack open the backside when there is 50cm of fresh and it's dumping 10cm an hour sideways with an avalanche danger of HIGH. Give your head a shake mister. Skin up, head out into the big stuff, have at 'er. Thanks to all the patrol. Tough job. I'm glad someone does it.
