Re x Mt Washington snow cat operater Dec 20th, Yes, you are correct, it is not cost effective to run the boom for the frontside only. The number of staff required to run the chair plus the chair cost alone make it silly to turn it for 10 turns. You can still hike up and in 5min enjoy untracked pow that those not willing to walk don't track up in 10 minutes. Many locals have said they actually prefer this uncrowded option better. Re Eagle not opening until avalanche control is done... Well, you have the poachers to thank for that. Due to the publics unwillingness to respect closed boundaries and not slip under closed rope lines, we must limit access to prevent the possibility of humans meeting explosives and ski cut avalanches. Maybe, with time and resect for rope lines, we can begin to review opening the Eagle during a/c in the west basin. How to help... educate folks when you see them slipping under the lines and resect the skiers responsibility code (see the back of you ticket). Lets all work together to get on the slopes as early as we can. Thanks.

Mount Washington is glorious! Powder days every day, small lift lines, challenging terrain, the outback. Been here a week, every day is a better powder day then the last. We love you Mount Wash :) Merry Christmas.

Yesterday being Christmas Eve we skied the Lake Trail at Mount Washington! The trail was in excellent shape and the weather picture perfect. The temperature -5 degrees was comfortable in virtually no wind. Most of the trees still had their early snow accumulated on them which had turned them into snow ghosts. What a treasure we have here on Vancouver Island and kudos to the staff and management for trying to keep the trails open when weather permits!

Thursday Dec 20 was an incredible day. 75cm of light fresh powder after a major storm on the previous day. Blue skies, slight breeze in the morning and then dumping powder in the afternoon. The ski patrol had the Outback open at 9:25am! The first incredible major powder day and the patrol had the Outback ready early. They brought in extra people to make sure the work was done. I did a half dozen runs in the morning with fresh tracks each time. After a few wet storms before the season that laid down a solid base covering up the mountain really well. Since the start of the season, it's been -5 or so putting down an incredible base of light powder. No chowder powder so far this year, it's light powder that this mountain hasn't see for years and it keeps coming down.

WOW, what a day on the mountain! 57 cms in 24 hours of unbelievably light snow. The Boom open early was a treat as well. Yahoo.

Yes, a great start to this season. Even dirty al has chased down a few good lines on dads run. This mountain rocks and it's only getting better! If you hit some McKay lake laps via the burnt tree ridge take a look at the scars and tele turns near papas pipe. Sick lines thx 2 the dad hunters!! Cheers

x-mt. washington snow cat operator
Up until this year I have accepted the product that Mt washington has provided and for the most part enjoyed it. This year, however, there has been a change in avalanche safety management. I will make an attempt and speculate that the partial opening of the front side of the mt. that we have seen in past years has become too much liability and cost for the powers that be to continue with. What appears to be policy now is, no access up the Eagle until the entire front side has been cleared by patrol. Unfortunately, with staffing levels in the pro patrol ranks the Eagle has seen delays from an hour to an hour and a half. Then the whole routine starts again on the boom. This is difficult to stand by and not comment on when for 4 years in the mid 80's I delivered the pro patrol up to the top of the mtn. in the dark to prepare the blasting equipment and be ready to move at day light. It becomes a question of money similar to other posts. Somedays visibility could be used as an excuse but not as a rule. I hope someone with pull will read this post and bring back the commitment that others once had for customer service. Thanks, if you're listening.

"Fantastic start to the snow season on the mountain. Last time I saw coverage of the mountain this good was back in 1996. Low density snow has been a gift from the gods for the past three years, thank you. Definitely off to a solid season of riding the snow provided by the winter storms from the Aleutians." What a great start to the season; open earlier than predicted and great conditions. To all of you who like to complain, stop it! If you are lucky enough to be able to get up skiing anywhere in BC with family and/or friends then you are more fortunate than most. A message to another reviewer, you complain about the amount of carpets then follow it up by stating that you will be utilizing the carpets with your daughter, which is great that even the youngest are able to enjoy what Mount Washington has to offer and you are able to enjoy it with her. Every mountain has something for every body. Take advantage of what works for you and avoid what doesn't. If you want cheaper tickets step up and buy 6 packs early, you will get a better rate and a free day in April and if you find yourself not able to use them all in time they are pretty easy to sell. Almost 300 cm and plenty more to come. See all you happy people on the slopes :-)

I understand that skiing has never been an inexpensive activity, but escalating price increases concern me. Adult lift passes are up another $3 this year, which is a 4.4% increase - above inflation and wage growth. I know that skier numbers were down last year. Could high prices be the cause? Are even higher prices meant to compensate? That strategy hasn’t worked for BC Ferries. I’m sure there is room to cut costs. Executive salaries maybe? There were way too many admin staff in the office during the off-season. Who thought 4 Magic Carpets were a good idea - with each requiring at least 2 staff? I’d like another pricing tier for young children. When my child turns 6 next year, her rate will be the same as a 12 year old. She won’t yet have the ability to ride the chairs and I’ll be buying myself a ticket just to ride the carpets with her. On a positive note, the staff have been excellent this year.
