Australia Leads Race For Southern Hemisphere Openings
Our Southern Hemisphere Weekly Snow Roundup #317 has a detailed breakdown as Australia receives up to 25cm (10") of fresh snow, while New Zealand and the Andes wait for more snow and prep for winter openings. Here's a quick summary.
New Zealand
Recent weather has delivered rain, sleet and some snowfall, but temperatures have rarely stayed below freezing long enough for significant snowmaking and base building. Most resorts are waiting for colder conditions before opening. Colder southerly weather is expected to lower freezing levels across both islands. Summit temperatures should fall to between -6°C and -8°C, with bases ranging from -2°C to +3°C.
Australia
Australia's 2026 season begins this King's Birthday weekend, and they will receive an opening-week snowfall boost. During the week, overnight temperatures dropped as low as -5°C, snowmaking systems have been operating, and recent rain, sleet and snow showers have helped build anticipation ahead of opening day. Falls Creek and Hotham reported 15cm (6") of fresh snowfall, while Mt Buller received 25cm (10”). Light snow showers are most likely in New South Wales, while Victoria turns colder and drier. Sub-zero nights will continue to support snowmaking and improve early-season conditions as the Aussies gear up for the season.
Argentina and Chile
Cold but mostly dry weather continues across Argentina's ski regions. The High-Andean resorts have seen mountain temperatures between -3°C and +7°C. However, the Patagonian resorts have remained milder, with little or no snow.
In Chile, the ski season has yet to begin, with most resorts still more than a week away from their planned opening dates. However, colder weather is expected as freezing levels fall across the Andes. Upper-mountain temperatures should drop to between -6°C and -10°C overnight. However, a mid-week storm is approaching, and next weekend could see the green light for the season starter.

5 More Reasons To Go Premium This Winter
Sure, being able to see 16-days into the future is a pretty neat trick, but since the last southern hemisphere's snowfalls, we’ve also updated plenty of other features on the snow-forecast site and app too.
- Webcams - We’ve added hundreds of webcams globally and continue to add more to give you live views of the conditions
- Widgets - Available for iPhone and Android, our new widgets let you choose webcams and multi-altitude forecasts to have at your fingertips, so you don’t even have to open an app.
- 3D maps - We’ve updated the maps on the app to 3D relief maps to give you a real-world view of the mountains around you.
- Hindcast - Almost more important than the snow falling today is what fell yesterday, last week or even last month. With our hindcast feature, you can look back in time and see how your chosen venue has been shaping up snow-wise.
- Bonus. Snow Alerts Although not new by any means, our world-famous Snow Alerts are going from strength to strength. They notify you via email when significant snowfall or fresh powder is reported for your specific resort within a 3, 6, or 9-day forecast window. This past winter, we were sending out up to 180,000 alerts per day. And there’s nothing that gets the WhatsApp-Ski-Group more excited than an incoming snowstorm screenshot.

All these features mean premium members can enjoy the new 16-day extended snow forecast, as well as more accurate and detailed shorter-range data. Use your 16DAYS discount code now, and make sure you are getting the best snow conditions, whether you are tracking conditions in the next few hours, want to know whether to book time off work next week or need to plan a trip in a couple of weeks.
