A-Basin Celebrating Big 8-0

Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin ski area turns 80 this year and has celebrations planned.

The ski area, one of the world’s highest at 2 miles above sea level, is also one of the most snow sure with a season that can last from October to June, sometimes July, meaning it might just be one of the surviving ski areas in another 80 years.

The centre was established just after WW2 in 1946 when Larry and Marnie Jump opened it with a lone rope tow, adding two single-chairlifts the following year.

"We are a mountain built around great terrain and passionate skiers and riders," said Alan Henceroth, now resort President who has been working there for nearly half its history. "These immovable things that make us have kept this place true to itself.”

The 80th winter will be celebrated across the resort with special events, heritage highlights and nods to A‑Basin’s pioneering past. The anniversary season reflects the mountain’s evolution from its early days as a rugged, locals’ hill to its modern reputation for expert terrain, sustainability leadership and a uniquely welcoming culture.
