Went first week of April 06 on recommendations as a good late season destination. We weren't let down. Superb conditions for Spring (several feet of new powder). Town - small, fairly uninteresting place, limited shops/bars etc.: appeals to middle class brits, predominantly skiiers, staying in 4 star hotels, but more boarders should come here - boarder friendly chairs, few flats, v few T's and enough to keep you interested for a week (as long as you are not interested in a terrain park, because there is isn't one. Apres-ski fine if limited [check out the nederhutte - great laugh)] and resort quiet later on. Sure to return again.

I have been going to Obergurgl since I was 7 years old and still love it more than any place in the world after 15 years. the skiing is amazing, especially with the top express, and never really any queues unless your stuck with ski school - time it well ie. not 9.45 or 1.30. Apres-ski is awesome - would recommend the Nederhutte on mon, wed, fri. In the evening the only place to be is the Josl Keller (also the best hotel in the resort, but I'm biased). Obergurgl boasts the friendliest people in the world - head to Davids Hutte in Obergurgl for the best lunches and also a great skiing area with pretty empty slopes all the time. Have also rarely had any snow troubles in Obergurgl - snow machines rarely used, but are put to good use if they are needed. I'm heading out on thursday, having been away from the place for 9 months!!! You must go....

Obergurgl has got to be the best resort i've ever been too. Many people who have skiied all around the world are hooked once they have been to Obergurgl, and return exclusively year after year. Lift queues are never a problem, recent levels of investment have been so high that drag lifts are scarce.
I love the place so much that i decided to learn German and will be spending the whole season in Obergurgl (05/06), working as a Ski Instructor! So come to Obergurgl! See you there...
Just had another great week in Obergurgl (19th - 26th March 2005). This was the week before Easter. The weather was fantastic - warm and sunny except for Friday. This is a very busy week but service was very efficient at the Eidelweiss Hotel at lunchtimes. Sometimes getting on the lifts can be a problem with a 15 minute queue when the ski schools start in the afternoon.
The Tuesday ski show was very crowded and it took a good 45 min queuing at the bottom of the Gondola. Well worth seeing the show but you need to get there early to get a good view and miss the rush.
Can be expensive if you eat a la carte, but we had dinner in the Eidelweiss (table d'hote) for about £10 each. Superb food and usually too much to eat all 4 courses.
Also a lovely little cafe, Oetzal backery, I think, where you can get Apfelstrudel and Vanilla sauces for £1.50, but you need to be in before 4.00 pm as they run out early.

Just returned from a 'WHITE WEEK' in Obergurgl. What a fantastic resort with plenty of skiing and very little else (shoppers beware, Oxford street it definately is not!). Stayed at the Bellevue hotel, lovely hotel with very friendly owners and staff, and excellent food. Skiing was a bit icy as no snow had fallen since the end of november which mean't we were skiing mainly on man made snow, however this was rectified a couple of days after we left, heavy snow falling over the alps improving conditions considerably. Both resorts (Obergurgl & Hochgurgl) offer excellent facilities and now the 'TOP EXPRESS' gondola links the two resorts you can stay on the snow all day with the exception of a 9 minute ride on the gondola.
Whilst you are in either resort make sure that on tuesday evenings you take the Festkogel bahn gondola to the top station no later than 20.30 where after warming yourself with a glass of gluwein, you will be treated to a fantastic ski show laid on by the Obergurgl ski school instructors followed by a fantastic firework display (all free of charge, hoewever don't forget to take your liftpass). If you are feeling brave you can ski back down the floodlit run or you can catch the gondola back down, but beware at around 3000 metres at that time of night 'WRAP UP WARM'.
Obergurgl is more expensive for food and drink than some other Austrian resorts, but this may have something to do with the fact that it is situated right at the far end of the dead end Ãtzal valley?
Do yourself a favour, book a ski holiday to Obergurgl, I don't think you will be disappointed.
Myself and my son Duane spent a week skiing in Obergurgl in January 2004 and really enjoyed it. It is a beautiful place with friendly people, great hotels and terrific snow. We'll be back again soon!
