Went skiing in Obergurgl/Hochgurgl between 6th and 13th December 2008. Restaurants, Niederhutte and David's Hut very good. The skiing is very good especially in Hochgurgl and the view from the top mountain star is amazing. Usual very friendly Austrians, can't do enough for you. I stayed at the Hochfirst in Obergurgl which is the best hotel I've ever stayed at in the Alps by a country mile. Great food, efficient staff, great facilities and easy access to the slopes. Lift queues, what lift queues? Would recommend this resort no problem.

Came back on 21st Dec 2008 from a week's skiing in Obergurgl. Wow - talk about too much snow towards the end of the week. On the Sunday even the guy trying to keep the road clear in the resort gave up - I have never seen so many people walking in a resort. The resort is small and fairly quiet - but that's not to say it's not great fun. It was our first visit to Austria after many years skiing in France - not sure I would go back to France. The Austrian people were amazingly friendly - helpful lift staff, helpful bar staff, helpful skischule staff, friendly skiers and boarders - the list goes on. The runs were a mixture of wonderful long blues and some more challenging reds - but all of them very empty compared to French runs. No queues - seriously - even in the mornings the gondolas and chairs simply swallowed all the people with no queues. It's probably not the most challenging, but with the ability to go off piste very readily I think it has enough to keep most people happy. Like all the others reviewers, the Nederhutte is definitely the most fun - we took our 3 little ones (6yrs, 5yrs and 3yrs) with us to the Saturday afternoon / evening and they loved it. Dancing on the tables and benches and then, to top it all off, a lift down on a piste machine and in bed by 8:30pm. Hotel Edelweiss is the hotel in the centre, but the Alpen Wellness is well placed for a quick rope pull and ski to a gondola. All the hotels are of good quality and the ski bus is regular and on time - even in the snow. Romantica pizzas are truly wonderful and cooked to order very quickly (and you can take them away.) We took the kids to the barrel bar (at the bottom of the main run near the Spar) - basically looks like a barrel from the outside and they loved this as it does 'kids shots' as well as adult ones. Again, wonderful staff. So yes, if a friend was asking would I recommend Obergurgl I would wholeheartedly say yes.

Just back from a family week in Gurgl (Obergurgl), and it snowed and snowed and snowed more. Pistes in first few days were great, best start to a season in 20 years apparently. Once it started snowing it was bye, bye pistes. Many under 8-10 inches of fresh powder that they just could not keep up with because no sooner had they tried than it fell again. Safest routes through the trees. Best mountain retreat was without doubt Nederhuette; very slick operation, great staff and the apres-ski nights were packed, and this was a quiet week. It's also good value for evening food. Skiing down after a few lemonades is always fun and is an easy run back to the village. A skidoo or even pistenbully ride for those not too steady on the skis is available. Good food at reasonable prices at the 'Romantica' pizzaria attached to the Hotel Madeline is worth checking out. Lastly hotel Schonblick was good, clean, warm and friendly.

While I can't remember the exact figures, the lift capacity in Obergurgl is something like 10 times that of its maximum high-season population. This is completely intentional. You'll rarely find yourself in a queue. Not to say the resort is quiet. The Nederhut is, hands down, one of the best ski-down mountain bars in the Alps. Excellent food, reasonable prices and, best of all - Rudy and Manny - the two piece apres-ski outfit that is guaranteed to entertain (just make sure you remember the show... if not, the skidoo will probably have taken you down to the village!) Obergurgl is not known for the difficulty of its slopes but it has a micro-climate making it very reliable (it's one of Austria's highest parishes). The excellent lift system makes up for the lack of blacks, allowing an unprecedented number of speed-rides down the long, banking motorway slopes. The hotels tend to be excellent and there are a few lively village bars. This tiny resort is a world away from the crowds in Solden, even if it is really just up the road. There is no better place to convert a new skier to Alpine ways. A great place to show someone who's done a few stints in the likes of Andorra or Bulgaria what skiing is really about.

Fabulous ski resort- had a wicked holiday there this year, snow excellent, virtually no lift queues and a great hotel- Madeleine. Incredible service and very comfortable rooms. Also experienced the care of Vicky the Crystal rep who is absolutely second to none. What she doesn't know about Obergurgl is not worth knowing! She made our hoiday this year and we hope she will be back next year!

Just returned from a weeks boarding in Obergurgl (27th Jan - 3rd Feb 2007.) We stayed at the Alpenblume but had our meals at The Edelweiss and Gurgl which was superb, 5 courses every night. The resort itself is very small with only a handful of bars, mostly in hotels. The Josl was good fun as was the Austria Bar. The Nederhutte and David's Hut provide excellent entertainment and service (a waiter/waitress takes your order on a pda and it is delivered within a minute most times). Most of the runs had decent snow cover thanks to the cannons but it was getting a little thin and icy late in the afternoon. I though Hochgurgl provided the better runs, the red 28 a favourite with people in our group along with the red 25 down to Untergurgl which had some exciting tight winding bends. I'd recommend a day out to Solden which can be included on your ski-pass for an extra 10 euro. This included the hourly ski-bus. Also, to save time travelling to Hochgurgl on the top express gondola just get the ski-bus that runs every ten minutes between the two resorts. I agree with the other contributors; virtually no queues so always on the slopes.

Just spent the week in Obergurgl (13th - 20th Jan 2007). The skiing in this resort is excellent and the snow good although it was in desperate need of snow by the time we left. I stayed in the Gotthard which was superb all round. The lifts have no queues and the pistes are empty. I agree with the person below that the Nederhutte is the place to be. It has a live band on Mon, Wed and Friday but get there early (3pm) to be sure of a table and seat. It is located on the main run to the resort and you have to ski back in the dark whilst drunk. It is well lit and you seem to ski better than ever !!!! I have been to Austria for the past 4 seasons and this resort takes some beating.

Excellent resort which was celebrating its 50th birthday. Friendly people. Hotel Madeliene was the best. Excellent food and service. Staff couldn't do enough and special thanks to Agnes. Ski runs to the village were good. Convenient for everything with a compact village setting. Nice bars. Awesome night at the Niederhutte Mountain Restaurant. Good food and service and excellent fun and entertainment. Best night for years, well recommended. Vicky, ski rep for Crystal was the best ever. Professional, informative, hardworking. Couldn't do enough to make our holiday enjoyable. So a very special thanks to Vicky for all her hard work and commitment. Regards Tony

First time in Obergurgl - 30th Dec.2006 to 6th Jan 2007. What a great resort - good skiing and plenty of snow unlike some others. Ski straight into the apres-ski bars Hexengurgl and Fassl. Hotel Madeleine; best we have stayed at - welcoming, excellent food, and superb roaring fire in the bar area. Everyone in Obergurgl was really friendly. No problems with lift queues. Firework display on New Years Eve was excellent to watch from the ski school meeting point with the hotels competing for the best display! Few more independent quality restaurants needed if you want a break from half board. Can we better this resort for New Year 2007???

Just returned from a week skiing in Obergurgl, 16-23Dec06. We had previously been before 12 years ago and have returned this year with our 7 and 9 year old and met up with 5 friends. Fantastic place, kids loved the ski school, great snow, snowed three days we were there, very friendly people and stayed at the Hotel Alpenland which was also excellant, so much so the kids NEVER want to go on a sunshine summer holiday again and we have just booked up to go for another week in February 07. Can't wait, if you love skiing you won't be disappointed.
