We went to Niederau for Christmas last year and it was fantastic. We stayed at the hotel Sonnschein which we could not fault in any way. Great accommodation, staff and food, it couldn't have been better. The resort itself is beautiful, and although ski school was busy we were well looked after and look forward to returning one day, it was our first attempt at skiing and my husband has definitely got the bug! 10/10 in all respects.
Neiderau what can I say as others have said it seems to hold a special place in your heart. I took my teenage son on his first skiing holiday and I have never known him to wake up so early every day. We stayed in The Hotel Vicky and loved it. It is basic but I have yet to find a ski resort hotel that isnt. At times it was like a carry on film but we are easily pleased and the staff work extremely hard to please. After all you are they to ski not to sit in your room. The sort of people that complain may prefer Benidorm for a hoilday. Ski school was fabulous and the best blues you could ski on to gain confidence. We now ski in Verbier every year but my heart will always remain in Neiderau and I hope one day to return.
We went to Austria in January 2006 on our first ski holiday as complete beginners.
The flight with Lauda Austrian Airlines was excellent - fresh smoked salmon meal with as much wine as you could drink. The transfers to and from Niederau were approx 1hr and were very efficient. Be warned - Innsbruck airport check-in on our return journey was a disaster. We queued for about 1.5 hrs with only about 20 people in front of us. We were not checked in until 0745 hrs and the plane left at 0810!!Everyone seemed to be in the same boat - it didn't make a difference where the flights were going to. However, this was the only blip.
The Hotel Austria was quite basic and the reception was a bit smoky. However, it was very clean apart from that and the location is the best in the village. There was also a free apres-ski snack every afternoon but no entertainment at all in the small bar. It is 1 minute walk to the nursery and beginners slopes, to the gondola and ski school and the free ski bus stop is right outside. The hire shop is right underneath the hotel with a separate ski storage room and heated boot room provided for those staying at the Austria. All of the staff seemed to speak quite good English and were very helpful when needed. The restaurant is quite good - breakfast is a selection of meats, cheeses, cereals and juice and the evening meal is four courses - self-service salad, soup, main and dessert. The evening meal was different every night (although a lot of pork) and there was always a veggie option (you pick your evening meal in the morning at breakfast, choice of 3). Wine with dinner was approx 3 euro 50 for a 1/4 bottle of wine which was quite cheap. We also made use of the sauna and swimming pool but remember that in Austria, nudity is the norm for the sauna/steam room! Our room and bathroom was quite small but had a balcony looking over a lovely view of the church, village and mountains. However, the bells in the church ring at all hours. Again the room was clean but quite hot and there was no shower curtain. On our last morning we left very early and the hotel gave us a breakfast pack the night before consisting of rolls with ham and cheese, a flask of tea and fruit.
Our ski lessons at the Wildschonau Ski School (the reds!) were with Phil (from Yorkshire) and they were excellent. The lessons were varied and a lot of fun and on the last two days he had us on the easier parts of red runs. The snow was also excellent for this time of year. We went tobogganing and on the horse drawn sleigh ride both of which are excellent. If you aren't a skier, there seemed to be quite a few people at our hotel went walking instead. Apart from that there is only a couple of shops in the village but there are organised day trips to Salzburg and Innsbruck. The Cave Bar is ok but the best bar is the Sports Bar next door to the Austria. The atmosphere is great with a mixture of music, including karoke and is frequented by locals, tourists and ski instructors. This is a very friendly resort and we met some great people which added to the overall enjoyment of our first ski holiday. Some we spoke to had been coming to Niederau for years.
On the Thursday our ski school held a time trial ski race with an "awards ceremony" on the Thursday night at the Hotel Hafernwirt. Great fun, everyone got a gold, silver or bronze medal and some got trophies. Every Sunday night the ski school holds a ski demonstration which lasts about half an hour but is worth seeing - good entertainment for all. We would recommend Niederau and the Hotel Austria for first time skiers especially as you don't want to be put off the first time trying to walk too far in ski boots and carrying skis and poles, and also for the excellent ski school.
We have already booked the same hotel, resort and lessons for next year. There are probably better hotels in the village but I doubt that they could beat the Austria for location.
My wife and I and our 15yr old son spent half term week at the comfortable and friendly Hotel Hannes. We've skied a few times before but did not find the slopes as easy as the brochures suggested. From the top of the gondola the only way back to base was by fairly difficult reds although there were some nice blues around the summit if you didn't mind coming back down in the lift. Nearby Auffach was definitely worth a visit where you could use the same ski pass for plenty more slopes. The village was not exactly quaint and traditional. There was no obvious centre but it seemed to have been built up to cater for skiers with plenty of hotels, bars and places to eat.
Hi, it's Katie again. Just replying to the message from Malcolm. Hotel Vicky was excellent and many others who have stayed there also think it. Whilst in Niederau, all you do is ski and you only really want the hotel to stay in. Yes, Hotel Vicky may not be 5* luxury but it was certainly a great environment and the food, staff and accommodation were excellent. The apres-ski at the hotel was great and all of the staff were very inviting. The whole feel of the hotel was great and the atmostphere was inviting. I do recommend this hotel as a base for when you ski and for the evenings entertainment, relaxation. Overall the holiday was great and I can't wait to go back next year!
We have just got back from a week at the Hotel Vicky in Niederau and have to say we were very disappointed with the accommodation. It definitely does not deserve it's 3 star rating. Our bedsheets had cigarette burns in them, the windows were dirty, the carpets were dirty and the phone was broken. In the public areas there was paint peeling off the walls, stains on the carpets, the phone in the foyer was broken and the fridge in the foyer was broken. Crockery was chipped and dirty and the glasses were dirty. The staff were all very helpful and friendly but all very young and in-experienced. Two of our party were very ill with a bug that affected quite a few guests and we then stopped using the dining facilities and ate elsewhere. We have had numerous holidays in Austria and this is our first in a British run establishemnt and the difference was glaringly obvious, you would not find this type of shabby accommodation with cigarette burns in the sheets in an Austrian Hotel.
You've got to go to Niederau- it's just the best. Try and stay at the Hotel Vicky. The staff are brilliant. Chris is a hero - he fell down a crevasse and survived. You might have read about him in the national press. Tom is so laid back he is almost horizontle(spelling?) and Kirk - "my Kirky" - is a ball of fun in the bar. Too many nice foHe comes from Holland- wears ski boots winter and flip flops in the summer. Go to Niederau before you die!
Hi, its me again and guess what we've booked today and we're off to Niederau this Saturday 18th March for the well! lost count of how many times. Had the most fantastic time in January there were 19 of us. We completely took over, and guess what, I won the ladies gold cup, and yes I'm telling everyone. Got 3 days to pack now and I will be up all night. We are as excited as we always are. Can't wait. Staying at the Vicky again, just us 3 this time. Been itching to go again this year and thought it was going to be too late then, guess what, had a little look on the internet checked the snow conditions out and then pressed that button to book. Next thing is we'll be moving there! Let you know how we get on. Here we come!
Niederau is excellent I've been skiing before in France - Niederau is much better. The instructors are A LOT gentler with the children in Niederau compared to France. I enjoyed this holiday much more! There are two skischools, the reds and the blues, I went with the reds - not much difference between the two but the reds won best ski school in the world award in 2004. Hotel Vicky was excellent. Enjoy the apres-ski in Niederau if you can. There are two nightclubs, if you want to go they are excellent - open until 9am if you want! but if it is not your scene you cannot hear them even if you are staying right next door! Niederau is a pretty little village and the runs are great - red 19 under the gondola is the best! I recommend this place to anyone who is not sure where to go. P.s I am going back in a couple of weeks for a last minute deal and enjoy the amazing snow!
Niederau is a great place if you like pretty, quiet and lovely Austrian villages. I went with my girlfriend and we stayed at the Hotel Sonnschien....5 star quailty and close to slopes, bars, etc....perfect.
The skiing is fine if you are an intermediate who likes carving and taking it easy...and just marvelling at the beautiful countryside. When combined with Auufach (15min in bus) the skiing is fine and the 7km run at Auffach is great. I can't recommend this place enough as long as you like laid back, small villages and not loads of noise and night life....although Cave bar and the apres hut rock big time but in a very un-intimidating way. Also remember that Hopfgarten is only 10k away and Soll 15km so if you want a day away then it is easy. Overall Niederau is a special and friendly place.
