A quirky place, friendly village and different to other resorts. In fact, perhaps Andermatt is better described as a developing village that happens to have some fantastic opportunities for off-piste skiing/boarding on the doorstep. We didn't see a queue for any lift when we visited, it was the end of April though, and still we had some great conditions. New developments like the Chedi and Raddisson concert hall show there is investment and an attempt to bring a wealthy clientele to the area. Time will tell. For now it still has a different kind of charm, and did I mention the awesome off-piste?

Wrote a report in 2008 and still going every year. So many changes but still a fantastic place to ski and walk in the valley and along the Rhone in the next valley. The lift system is now superb and there's usually no waiting for the lifts except at weekends. Good restaurants and cafes of all types. Returning in February to visit friends and the Gemsstock again

I went to Andermatt late March/early April and skied mainly on Gemsstock and while the runs may not be as maintained as some of the larger European/American resorts, I had a great time. When we arrived there was about 6m of snow at mid-mountain and 2m at base. Over the 10 days we were there around 1.6m of snow fell and it was an incredible experience with all the fresh snow in the steep couloirs. The snow never seemed to get tracked out and there were absolutely no lift lines. Will definitely be coming back.

Ski Arena - Andermatt ski center, in the canton of Uri in Central Switzerland is actually develloped in the axis west - east parallely to the train rail, starting from Andermatt (west) and ending to Sedrun (east). From Andermatt up to Dieni you can ski on your own skis. Further away you must take the train. Between Andermatt and Dieni is Oberalp station. I skied in Ski Arena on Saturday, 16th March 2019 and I can say I was not really happy with what the ski center offered to me. The main problem was high temperature, which caused the snow to be soft. I think that the pistes were not well or maybe not at all prepared. All the red pistes had many bumps. In particular, piste no 26 was in awful condition and was even dangerous to ski there. I started skiing from Andermatt, up to Dieni and then returned back to Andermatt. It took me approximately 3 1/2 hours. The itinerary I took were pistes 13, 18, 20, 37, 43 and 47 to Dieni and from there back to Andermatt pistes 49, 39, 36, 26, 27, 3, 2 and 1. As said, the ski center consists mainly of red pistes. None of them seemed to be very difficult because of inclination. The difficulty of all red pistes had to do with bad snow quality and many bumps. The landscape is mainly alpine. There are no trees except in Dieni section. Lift ticket from 12:00 at 67 Swiss Francs and ski equipment rental at the price of 47 Swiss Francs.

Hi Andermatt is not the typical resort for skiers. In the village 'the clocks stopped' in the 60´s when the tunnel through Gotthardt to Italy was built and Andermatt was no longer along the traffic flow over the pass. So that's the curse and charm of this place. Everything is old and slow. The mountains are also special. Almost all are north facing, steep, cold, no sun and get a lot of snow. They don't prepare much runs, so it's powder and stays like that for a while. Now some improvement will come, because there is an Egyptian investor building the " New Andermatt" with lush hotels and a luxury new apartment town. Time will show how it works. Accommodation right now is hard to find, as above mentioned it's old with charm, but expensive. We stayed in Basecamp Andermatt which is a cool alternative from hotels. It is an alpine hut above the village. This year has been cold and dry, needs some serious dump to be good to ski. It is now the end of January and it looks like the end of April. Maybe you guys are luckier than we were. Be safe, Chris

My family have been visiting Andermatt for many years and I recon it's the place to go. But if you want fish & chips and clubbing to the early hours stay away and keep Andermatt just as it is - a friendly village for those who keep going back and love it.

Andermatt is the place me and my family keep on going back to. Don't be fooled - beginners can learn here (I did 15 years ago). Ski school is great for kids - friendly, English speaking, patient and the races on Friday mornings are fantastic. For adults the skiing is always great - apart from maybe the odd warm sunny weekend when the crowds can be annoying. Usually you're annoyed if you have to wait 5 mins for a lift. The snow is always good and when it's fresh the Gemstock (we call it hell hole) is awesome. The village is quiet - but what's wrong with that. The places that are there are good, friendly, with good food and good beer. And, for the British smokers, you can smoke indoors.

Been going for 40 plus years; a really great place to go with all classes of skiing. The Gemsstock is fantastic but plenty of good pistes in valley and usually no waiting. Roger 2006 must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time as all our friends keep coming back so it can't be that bad. Looking forward to 16 days in Feb 2009.

If you're used to the typical French mega-resort, with 300 km of easy runs and some ugly concrete "villages", this is quite a change. The village is nice and quiet (there is a military complex, but it's not that big and outside the village). But it's the skiing that is especially different. Advanced and expert skiers will love this place. There are really just a few lifts, but they give access to some of the steepest, longest and most uncrowded runs in the Alps, the best snow (this is the area with the most snow of the whole Swiss Alps and it's mostly north-facing) and some of the nicest and longest off-piste. One interesting thing is that you can get on any train to move from one part to another of the resort (but there is also a free bus).

A great place for a long weekend. Direct flights from London and Edinburgh to Zurich. Motorway connection for self drivers renting a car or a great train journey into the centre of the resort. Change trains and you can go up the hill to Oderalp and ski. The main attraction is a big mountain with lots of ways down. It will certainly keep you happy for a few days. I had a powder day on Gemstock with fresh snow until 3 p.m. The second day there was still awesome off-piste. A sunny cruising day at Oderalp on day three made for a great long weekend. Longer off-piste descents and touring could be added to make for an adventurous week. Party animals should look elsewhere.
