Went to Tignes last month. First time in Europe since the 90's since we usually go to North America. Although better than I remember it, I still find the resort a bit like the concrete Paris Banlieu of Clichy-sous-Bois, just a lot richer. The piste grooming was Ok, but since I'm a boarder, I still find the experience and terrain parks across the pond to be better, in terms of ambiance and style. Next year, I'll be over to Sundance for the powder, and the year after, Whistler for the superb terrain (after the 2010 Olympics) - cant wait to get back. Thanks Tignes but see you again in maybe 10-15 years.

I have skied for over 40 years and believe Espace Killy (Tignes) is, without doubt, the best ski area in the world. For the first time in many years we didn't ski there in 2008. We went to Whistler instead - Espace Killy knocks it into a cocked hat. The lifts are faster and much more efficient, the ski area is so much larger, the snow is generally better and piste maintenance is in a different class. Admittedly, the French resort staff can be surly, although, this has improved in recent years and it doesn't really matter to my skiing enjoyment if the lifty says "have a nice day" (corporate policy in Canada). Nightlife can be as quiet or raucous as you want. We usually stay in catered chalets and are too knackered to have many late nights. I probably prefer Val to Tignes (it looks a bit nicer) but both are great and Tignes probably is better for skiing convenience. Roll on March for our next visit.
I go skiing twice a year. Once in January and once with the Eastern Holiday.
I have visited all the big resorts in France, but since 2000, I went every year at least one time to Tignes and the last 2 years I spend both my ski holidays in Tignes.
Without any doubt, this is the best resort in France. The Espace Killy ski area is so marvelous, you can't get enough.
The best places are Tignes Val Claret or Le Lac. I prefer Val Claret. From here you can access so many different slopes and you can ski to almost every apartment or Hotel in the Val Claret centre.
There are plenty apres-ski possibilities.
Thanks to the height (resort at 2100m), this resort is covered with plenty of snow from Novembre till May. And even at end of the season the quality of the snow is very good.
This resort is certainly worth a visit.

I visited Tignes in Dec 08. We had sooo much snow it was impossible to get out for 4 days of the week, the other 2 days were great; brilliant snow and fantastic runs, really enjoyed those days, The down side to Tignes is the absolutely ludicrous prices they think they can charge on resort. Between 7-10 euros for a pint of beer, 4 euros for a pint of milk 3.50 euros for half a loaf of bread.... the list goes on. We went self catering in a party of 3 and these prices meant we couldn't afford to really enjoy our holiday to the fullest, with the current exchange rate eating out and partying at night wasn't an option. The resort really needs to address this or face loosing out in a BIG way. My message to you is , if you're not loaded, need drink and grocery prices that won't leave you breathless, head to Italy, Les Duex Alpes etc,
I visited the area in 2000 and had a superb week in January. I went by train and had the benefit of two Saturdays skiing as opposed to travelling to and from the airport. Met a bunch of folks in a chalet in Val D'Isere led by Gerry and Gill who knew everywhere to go both to ski and eat. After a great week I decided that I had only skied about half of the resort and so went back in March staying in Tignes to discover the rest of the area. The second time was even better as I really started to understand how the lifts system linked together and so had to spend less time looking at piste maps and checking times of lifts. Have not missed a year since (except 2007 when I had a triple heart bi-pass and was under orders from the Doc.) All of the different parts have their own attractions and it is a question of both balancing your priorities and budget. I rarely pay more than £250 for a catered week using Skiworld who I believe to be the best operator in the Alps. You do have to wait until a week or so before setting off to get such deals and this means you can almost get three weeks for the price of two normal trips.
My favourite location is Val Claret where you have plenty of bars and restaurants and almost no walking as access to the slopes is close at hand. It is not in the same league as Val D'Isere for nightlife but I believe it does have the best restaurant in Le Caveau where the food and entertainment are the very best. The area sets the standard for ski resorts and I'm convinced that once you've tried it you will definitely want to return. I'm off again on Friday for a pre Christmas trip and hopefully will be back again in the new year. Enjoy
Went to Tignes last year. Drove down with two mates. What a cracking place; bit expensive but we went first week of Easter holidays and if you don't mind what accommodation you stay in it's not too bad. Drinks were 6-10 Euros depending when/ where you are.
Only problem I would say is we stayed in La Lavachet which was fine but to get from Val Claret at the end of the day it's either crush on a bus back with everyone else or leave yourself 20 minutues to catch the 3 lifts you need and ski you nuts off and you can ski to your door.
Will definitely be going back.
I went to Tignes from 3-10 of April and was amazed with the snow and resort itself. Tignes is not ugly as everybody is saying: pure concrete and stuff. There is no concrete as such, purpose built blocks are covered in wood and white facade and when looked from afar is impressive (those buildings work well with peaks surrounding them). Anyway, with global warming, in order to save space, we will see more of those as the skiing area shrinks. Snow is brilliant; plenty of it everywhere. Not many cannons to be seen there. In Val D'Isere area, closer to the village, it was going a bit sloshed but Tignes was mad with snow. Best skiing in Europe!
Just been for a week; 6th till the 13th and it has been amazing. Resort is very nice and not "concrete" as it may have been known to some. Runs are spectacular as is the snow and it's a pleasure being taught by the instructors. Club Tignes 2100 was very poor though! Meals smaller than what a dog would receive.
My family and I have been staying and skiing in Tignes for the past 4 years and in comparison to other European resorts that we have experienced, you will find the best snow conditions in this resort. The architecture is definitely lacking but the convenience of the free bus link and easy access to the pistes makes up for the lack of traditional alpine charm. I meet a lot of skiers on the lifts who confess that the lifts and slopes in Tignes are more superior than neighbouring Val D'Isere. So that great debate continues!!

Wow what a holiday. The quickest holiday I've ever had, thats for sure. Tignes is absolutely brilliant. Such a wide range of runs, you just cant do it all in one week (Val d'Isere as well). Good snow, great runs, 5 star for me.
