This is a great ski resort with something for all levels of skiing ability. There is the discovery zone for beginners and Taynton bowl for advanced with loads of terrain in between for intermediates. I have skied all over Europe and many resorts in Canada and North America. To find a resort this good and yet with little or no lift queues is amazing. The mountain friends are fantastic and staying off the main runs leads to powder days after snowfall!
The food on the mountain is not great but we came for the skiing. Eat a big breakfast in your accommodation then stop for coffee and cookies, ski through lunch as the slopes are even quieter then head back for home cooked meals. The store in the village is well stocked but shop in Invermere on the way in is my advice. Choppers landing, the golf club and greys all do a great evening meal at different budget levels.
Nice mountain with great little Nordic area. Small hill with a nice quiet village. Skiing looks pretty good; planning to head up tomorrow.
The staff leave a lot to be desired; a lot of the time are lazy, disinterested and nobody seems to know how things are supposed to be done. Took half a day to get a booking at the hostel on-hill, and I got bounced around several times between different departments. Guest services were the worst. A lot of the main lodge area staff look at you funny if you ask questions they should know the answer to, and they most certainly don't make any effort to learn what they don't know.
Garbage hill with no good food in sight. Sunshine, Lake Louise, Kicking Horse, Fernie, Kimberly and even Fairmont have a much better idea of how to operate a ski resort.
On our last day at Panorama for 2013-4 season. Have been here this year (our 9th) for just over 3 months; longest stay yet. The conditions this year have been some of the best we have experienced in our 35+ years of skiing. We still reckon that this is the most friendly resort that we have ever stayed at and that is why we keep coming back. Panorama is one of Canada's best kept secrets, although a few of us are bringing more friends and spreading the word. Looking forward to the 2014-15 season, sorry to be going home.
Just returned from an awesome week's skiing in Panorama, BC. This is a gem of a resort with plenty of difficult skiing and well maintained groomed pistes. So much more interesting than many European resorts and the staff and locals are friendly; not something you find in Europe very often. We were lucky with a huge dump of snow and I had the best few days skiing ever with my friends. We tried skiing with the mountain friends for the first time which was a great experience. Very family friendly and I would recommend it to anyone. Only wish I lived closer.
Skied Pano for the first time this year. Always perceived it to be a small, intermediate mountain, but was pleasantly surprised with the amount of black and double black runs for me while still lots of blue and green for the kids. A close second to Fernie, but for me it beats Louise and Sunshine hands down. Skied Whistler/Blackcomb a lot, but not for a while. If Pano gets some snow it could out do even these giants. Lots of vertical and numerous choices from just a few chair rides.
Snow has been sparse this year, but there's nothing the mountain can do about that. Tree tops poking through the snow don't hurt and I started enjoying my days a lot more when I stopped worrying so much about my bases. Found the snow making and grooming to be outstanding providing great alternatives on fast groomers when mother nature just hasn't come through for the glades and chutes. Go with the flow, your bases are disposable, each day only happens once!
I agree with the comments on the food service. We waited 30 minutes for a $7 hotdog (with a soggy bun). On a day when an event was occurring, the peasants (i.e. lift ticket buying public) were directed to other restaurants for service. Could have gone home for a better/cheaper/faster lunch. The restaurant was good and not much more expensive. We went directly there the next day we skied. Next time we'll probably pack a lunch.
The snowfall returned today and is expected to continue through the long weekend. Looking forward to exploring the mountain more with the new snow revealing its potential. Hopefully, the grumpy people will stay home.
We just want to address the comments from a couple of reviewers. First of all, thanks for coming out to ski Panorama! I'm sorry to hear that the conditions you experienced were what you expected. Unfortunately, Western Canada struggled for snow early this season so coverage was a little light. That combined with a warm December, which made snowmaking difficult, didn't allow us to open as much of the mountain as we would have liked.
Unfortunately, ski resorts are at the mercy of Mother Nature sometimes. However, we received a storm on January 3rd and again on January 10-12 and we're happy to report that conditions are much improved.
We take great pride in the accuracy of our snow and grooming reports. Our Mountain Ops team updates the grooming report and updates the trails open / closed every morning at 7:30am. Our Snow Reporter updates the snow report at 6:00am every day and gets the snow figures directly from our on mountain telemetry at the Summit plot.
We have 9 lifts in total, including a Village Gondola. We always list our Village Gondola exactly as it is - a Village Gondola, that brings skiers from our lower village and parking lot right to the base of the ski hill. There are 4 big (3 quads and a triple) lifts on the mountain, but those 4 lifts take skiers up 4000 vertical (the 4th highest in Canada) and access almost 3000 acres of terrain. The mountain is huge and skiing, fantastic. We have 116 of 120 trails now open.
Again, thanks for your visit and we're sorry to hear that your early season experience wasn't ideal. I would encourage readers to check out our Snow Report or Facebook page at any time to see current photos and read about current conditions on the mountain (sorry, snow-forecast wouldn't allow us to include direct links with this post).
Just returned from Panorama or it's nick name 'Iceorama'. Arrived on the 23rd Dec. Only one run available to the public off the main chair (Mile One) even though the web site stated 91 runs open. Runs off the Sunbird Chair were marginal; a lot of rocks and shrubs. The terrain should have been closed. They used to make snow on several trials: Millennium and Schober's but not this year. A lot of rocks and bear spots. My guess is they are hurting financially. They did make snow on several trails but even though it was the peak Xmas season the trails were still closed because the snow was not 'farmed'. The website grossly misrepresents the truth when it comes to snow conditions, grooming and facilities. Here's the real goods. Lifts of any consequence> 4. They advertise a 'gondola' but don't be fooled, it's only a people mover 1000m long from the parking lot to the main lodge. Trails: 121, if you could find 60 worthwhile you would be lucky. Grooming: for the ten days we were there only five trails were groomed on a regular basis. By noon many trails were too icy to enjoy. Stumbocks trail was great but the run out trail (Tayton) was a ski repair shop's dream.
The cafeteria, in the main lodge, is a disaster. They have a new system for food ordering which is inefficient. It took more than 30 min to get your order. Also they allow all the racers to bring their gear into the hall making space very limited.
Would not revisit.
PS: The Panorama writing crew and aliases will undoubtedly be busy putting a positive spin on the above with lines like ... "found great pow in Tayton Bowl" etc. etc. Don't buy into it.
Took 3 friends skiing opening day (Dec 6/13). Basically, only one run open to the public yet lift tickets were still expensive. Grooming report not accurate to say the least. Very hard to get real conditions and website is poor.
It was our first and last time to visit this horrible resort. We went as a family for a long weekend trip in August 2013. On our first day we have seen a mouse in the room, my kids got terrified. The maintenance guys came and we told them about where the mouse had run to, behind the fridge in the kitchen. They pulled the fridge to find a big hole in the wall. They put few traps, and next day the trap caught the mouse at 4am, while running in my kids room. It was a big scare to everyone in the family. Next day, while getting ready to go out, we saw another mouse in the room. Staff were not surprised about that as if it is a normal expectation since we chose to visit the mountain resort. Terrible resort, we felt disgusted. It was horrible experience. Is not recommended for families with children.
