Molltal Glacier (Mölltaler Gletscher) is not the biggest one but offers sufficient amounts of mostly blue and red skiing slopes. There is only a couple of black ones. However, Molltal offers also freeride areas with high probability of powder snow.
Due to glacier the season starts early (16 Sept in year 2012) and therefore offers great opportunity to start the skiing season immediately after your return from white sand beaches of Mediterranean sea.
Unfortunately, during this time also a lot of European skiing clubs and teams visit Molltal and occupy the slopes (especially in the morning).

Mölltaler Gletscher is great for the beginning of the season to get your legs in shape but limited skiing area with no challenging runs.
Busy with many ski races for kids prior to the opening of the other resorts. These kids have no ski etiquette.
Mölltaler Gletscher can get great powder snow in spring time!

Just skied the glacier last week 02 Nov 05. The area was about 50% open with a 3 chair lifts running supporting the pistes. Snow conditions were pretty good, and the views were excellent, with great views of the Grossglockner (highest peak in Austria), on the other side views down to the Gastein valley (not sure why its not linked to the Gastein ski region as it is so close to Sportgastein). Found the area hard to access at this time of year, as not many buses available. Skiing is mainly red runs, with some great off-piste potential.
