Champex-Lac is now overrun with guys with fat skis and no avalanche awareness. Having a beeper and backpack does not mean you have avalanche awareness. Be careful if going off-piste. Champex-Lac is not a very big place and most of the 'get outs' require you to point it and not dilly dally around, unfortunately lots of newbie's trash the place before lunch. Unless your an honest expert who knows the routes at Champex-Lac I'd suggest stay back in Verbier. There are some easy runs but do not drop in unless you know the proper safe way through - following tracks could be suicidal but I see it all the time.
A real find here. Trees and open powder fields accessible from the lift (yes it is old but there is no one here!). You don't come here to ski on piste but you CAN ski powder days after Verbier is skied out. Excellent touring options - chutes and steeps easy to get to. North facing too. For those in the know...
The comment about finding powder well after Verbier has lost its is correct. Also, if you have access to skins you will find super areas. Yes, the lifts are slow and yes, they are old but 45 mins from Verbier you can ski fresh powder all day and have a good meal to boot at 60% of Verbier prices. However, thank goodness that most people comming to Verbier has no access to skins or 4 wheel drives.
Nick, your not really keeping it under your hat - are you?!??!? - Thanks.
This resort is small and has a slow, old lift. There is a second one that is occassionally open. The pisted runs are not that exciting. Stay in Verbier!
Champex Lac is one of those hidden gems in the Swiss Alps, a real playground with lots of off-piste through the trees and some nice pisted routes with powder long after the south facing resorts have turned to concrete. Crowd free even at the peak of the season. If you're fed up with the crowds in Verbier and fancy some decent snow and a bit of peace and tranquility, Champex is the place for you.
P.S. Keep it under your hat!!
