Breckenridge has great powder skiing. The food that is offered on the slope and in the restaurants, however, is not as great. No place to go if you don't eat meat and cheese.
Had a work trip to Denver in early April and took the chance to ski two days in Breckenridge. It's about 1,5 hrs from Denver but more on the way back Sunday evening so take care if rushing for a plane. Lift passes are expensive compared to my favorite Pyrenees haunts and ski hire can also be expensive. Breckenridge has four mountain peaks: 7-10. Take the lift from the parking and go to peak 7 for some excellent long blues. Peak 8 is mixed blues, black diamonds and double blacks. Peak 9 has a beginners area and mixed blus/blacks. Peak 10 is advanced and the moguls can be hard on the back as they are deep. Altitude can be a problem as top lift can get to 14500 ft. Some tips: stay in nearby Frisco, it's cheaper and hire skis there and take the bus over. It can save you lots. Ski conditions are generally excellent with much soft dry snow.. but it can get cold. Breckenridge gets crowded at weekends but lots of varied skiing.
Breckenridge is a great mountain and wonderful if you have kids. The terrain parks are great and the adventure forests are heaps of fun. Unfortunately, snow was ordinary and lots of rocks and trees around. Second year running that we hit poor snow conditions in the USA (went to Heavenly last January). Still the runs are great and lots of variety. Beware of the altitude..it really does hit you for six and it's quite scary not getting enough oxygen. The altitude will probably mean other Colorado resorts in the future. Don't forget to check out the Silverthorne outlets as they are great. Foodwise all was great..went to Lucha, Breck Brewery (go for the 3-6 happy hour) and Quandary Grill (2 for 1 burgers on Tues that are awesome).
Flew back from Breck om Sunday 17th Feb 2008 and it was snowing!!!!
My family and I spent 11 nights at the ski in-ski out resort at Beaver Run, next to the Peak 9 super chair....first time in the USA and what a great location. Four mountains to choose from, wide and interlinked runs covering green (very easy) blue (real cruisers, although some fast stretches) blue/black (come demanding lumps and bumps), black single diamond (fast but not too hard), black double diamond (didn't get to those) and EX meaning Extreme (forget it!!!). In other words something for everyone especially snow and lots of it!!!
My daughter is a boarder and had lots of room to grow her ability including terrain parks and jumps. My wife and I ski and she was so confident by the end of our trip she followed us down blacks without complaint (she did not feel as though someone would come hurtling past on narrow tracks).
The Yanks were courteous and not at all brash in any way and always asked where we were from and how we were enjoying ourselves. In fact they did come across as truly sincere. They could not be friendlier.
Town and facilities were first class.....so as you probably guessed by now we are converted. Only thing I miss is Gluwien and French food but other than that if you can sit on a plane for 9 hours there and about 8 hours back it is worth the journey believe me....oh, one final thing....it can be bloody freezing on the lifts so take snoods, balaclava, glove liners and extra layers for the cold days!!
I have skied France and Austria and still love them but if you want snow and empty pistes with all manner of terrain go to Colorado.

Just spent Christmas and New Year at Beaver Run Resort, Breckenridge.
Wow, the Americans really know how to treat you well. The complex is great with pool, steam room and about 7 hot tubs!
The town is like a step back into the wild west, but with all the different types of food you could ask for.
Ski school for the kids was excellent, they came back on a high each day!
Now as for the runs and the snow, we went to avoid the dissapointment of last season in Europe, and we weren't dissappointed. Skiing in fresh powder for 7 out of 10 days, no waiting at the lifts and so much terrain you would not run out of choice. Your lift ticket covers you for days out at Vail, Keystone and a couple of other resorts nearby, so endless skiing available.
Go there, and soon!
I thought Breckenridge was great. I never go back to Europe after that. If I was going to stay anywhere in Breckenridge I wold go to the Beaver Run Resort. It is close to the lifts. You just walk outside and it's there. When you go into town and go into a restaraunt and you can just call Beaver Run Resort and they will come and pick you up. The snow was great the runs were huge. I want to go back next year.
Just come back from Breckenridge for the first time and can say without a doubt one of the best skiing holidays I have ever had and will ever go on. Okay so the Americans are a little over the top and get excited about the smallest of things. However the snow was amazing, the teaching from the ski school fantastic and general ambiance of the resort out of this world.
Runs were lovely and wide, I skiied mostly on peak 7,8 and a little on 9. I started off an advanced beginner and can now manage most blues. The ski school were lovely and friendly, my teacher was 79 years old!!
The snow was good for April, and only had 2 not so nice days out of 9. Can be very hot due to the high elevation, so wear plently on sun block.
Altitude sickness was not too bad, but everybody in out party suffered some form. It was mainly getting out of breath after walking up a flight of stairs or insomnia for the first few days.
Only concern is that ski companies don't tell you that all the resorts start to shut from even the first weekend in April. Cooper mountain started to shut around the beginning of April when I was out there. Although this does not mean complete closure, I do feel that we should be given the choice if we want to go to a resort that will partially close.
Nightlife was good. We all liked the Irish bar, they had an outside fire pit which was an excellent way to make new friends!!
Accommodation wise, do be careful as to where you pick. Stayed at the Pine Ridge Condos which backed onto the 4 o'clock run home- some hotels/apartments are some time away from ski lifts and runs back. However there is a good bus service that runs around the resort.
Food wise, use the gourment cabbie (what a fantastic idea) they will deliver anything food related (I think maybe even oxygen) to your place. Pick up their menu and choose from all the restaurents. The Blue River Bistro is lovely and the rest do the typical American food.

I skied for the first time in the USA at the beginning of April this year staying the Great Divide Lodge (originally booked to stay in the Village but it wasn’t very nice so they upgraded us for free – sister hotel). The season only had 1 week to go before it closed - WOW I wish I had discovered it years ago - save Europe for quick fix weekends and save up for a fab two week stretch – snow conditions were great, wonderfully sunny days with snow at night and the pistes were fantastic, beautifully groomed in the majority of places – it was nice to find stashes of powder, plenty of off-piste if that is your bag and no queues (had I entered skiers heaven?). Even managed to spend a day skiing through trees.
Lift pass takes you to Vail and Beaver Creek and other resorts but hire a car, as they are a disjointed bus ride away. Managed to buy this seasons skis and binding at less than half price of UK price due to their end of season sales – also take an empty suitcase for Silverthorn shopping centres, dirt-cheap bargains to be had on some excellent brands. Eating out was just brilliant – cheap and cheerful to posh nosh – something to suit everyone even the ankle biters – try Bubba Gumps for seafood or Kenoshi for out of this world steaks and Downstairs at Erics for burger or Pizza. Altitude can be a problem for the first couple of days – gives you mild headaches – you can get yourself to the supermarket and buy a can of Oxygen on your first day and keep sniffing it – next time I will get script from docs though. As you can gather, I am a convert and I am off again in early March 2006 – this time with 4-wheel drive to explore other places – don’t think I will come home!
Great ski area, well maintained and efficient lift system, good off piste, cheap and tasty food on piste.
Boring as hell night life if you are used to somewhere like Val D'Isere.
