North America Report
The big news in North American skiing this week is Sunshine ski area near Banff opening for 16 days of summer skiing last Saturday. It’s only the third time the centre has opened for summer skiing in nearly 100 years of operations and will see the centre open on Canada’s national day, July 1st. The move came after what was Sunshine’s second snowiest winter on record, recording over 1025cm of snowfall. The centre has opened the Strawberry Express chairlift for the duration and a second lift, the Standish chair, for as long as the snow lasts. Alongside 10 ski runs, there are also no less than three summer terrain parks in operation.
Elsewhere in North America, the Timberline ski area on Mt Hood in Oregon remains open with skiing on the Palmer snowfield and a terrain park. Copper Mountain's hike-to summer terrain park is also open to the public on Thursdays to Sundays inclusive. The Beartooth Basin summer ski areas seem to be taking things day by day, most recently announcing it will stay open to Sunday, the 28th, but may continue later.
