Weekly Snow News for North America, updated 16 April 2026: Pacific storm delivers over 1.2m (4ft) snowfall as late-season snow boosts conditions.

North America Report Intro

The North American ski season is steadily winding down, although conditions remain mixed, with spring warmth interspersed with late-season snowfall.

A major Pacific storm delivered significant snowfall to the US West Coast, with some areas receiving over 1.2m (4ft), alongside strong winds with gusts up to 90mph. The fresh snow has allowed at least one resort to extend operations into late May.

Across the Rockies and western Canada, temperatures continue to fluctuate sharply, while eastern regions are now firmly in spring conditions with widespread closures.


Western Canada Snow Report

Western Canada continues to alternate between spring and winter patterns. Valley temperatures frequently rise above +10°C, while alpine zones drop to around –10°C during colder spells. These colder periods have delivered 5–10cm top-ups.

Five leading resorts — including Whistler BlackcombSunshine VillageLake LouiseMarmot Basin and Silver Star — remain open, most planning to operate into May. Marmot Basin recently reported 22cm (9") of fresh snowfall and continues to offer full terrain access, including high alpine bowls.

Western Canada Snow Forecast
Spring conditions dominate, with freezing levels rising above mid-mountain. Lower slopes will be above zero, while upper elevations hover closer to freezing. Most areas stay dry, with snowfall limited to the highest terrain.

Eastern Canada Snow Report

Most eastern Canadian resorts have now closed, with only a handful continuing operations. Tremblant and Mont Sainte-Anne are expected to end their seasons this weekend.

Ontario’s Blue Mountain is continuing towards the end of the month with limited terrain, while Quebec’s Sommet Saint Sauveur is expected to operate a small summer snow area into May. Temperatures have been firmly spring-like, with bases ranging from +5 to +20°C, plenty of sunshine and occasional rain showers.

Eastern Canada Snow Forecast
Spring conditions continue, with soft snow, patchy lower cover and only a small chance of light flurries on the highest slopes.


US West Coast Snow Report

A slow-moving Pacific storm brought heavy snowfall to California before spreading into the Southwest, with totals reaching up to 4 feet (1.2m) in some locations. The snowfall was accompanied by strong winds, with gusts up to 90mph triggering severe weather warnings. Kirkwood recorded around 70cm (28"), while Palisades saw 53cm (21") and Mammoth Mountain reported 50cm (20").

Mammoth has confirmed it will remain open through to the Memorial Day weekend following the fresh snowfall. Further north, additional snow is now falling in the Cascades, with more expected at higher elevations.

US West Coast Snow Forecast
Mild temperatures dominate at most elevations. Lower slopes will see rapid softening, while upper elevations may dip below freezing overnight. Conditions remain mostly dry, with snowfall limited to the highest terrain.

US Rockies Snow Report

Around 10 ski areas remain open across the Rockies, with several aiming to continue into May. Some, like Loveland, have confirmed closing dates at the end of April. Conditions have been mixed, with variable cloud, softening snow during warm afternoons and fresh snowfall on higher terrain. Over the past 48 hours, a colder system delivered up to 35cm (14") of snow. Grand Targhee reported the largest accumulations, while other areas also saw smaller but welcome top-ups. Mountain temperatures have ranged from 10–41°F.

US Rockies Snow Forecast
Mild spring weather continues, with softening snow at lower elevations. Only limited snowfall is expected, confined to the highest peaks during brief colder spells.

US Midwest Snow Report

Only a handful of Midwest ski areas remain open. Michigan’s Mt Bohemia and Boyne Mountain are among those aiming to continue into May, supported by deep, machine-built bases. The past week has seen consistently above-freezing temperatures, with daytime highs reaching into the 70s°F and occasional light rain showers.

US Midwest Snow Forecast
Warm and mostly dry conditions persist, rapidly softening remaining snow and accelerating the end of the season.


US East Coast Snow Report

Winter has effectively ended across the Eastern US, with warm temperatures and rain dominating conditions. Daytime highs have reached the 60s–70s°F, with mild nights limiting refreezing. Only a handful of resorts in northern states, including parts of MaineVermont and New Hampshire, remain open.
