Huge Snowstorm Forecast for Australia’s Season Opening Weekend
After a sub-optimal few weeks, in terms of natural snowfall, in the run-up to Australia’s 2025 season opening weekend, a major storm system is expected to bring the best part of a metre (40”) of snowfall to the country’s ski areas from Saturday, over the first four days of the season.

After a sub-optimal few weeks, in terms of natural snowfall, in the run-up to Australia’s 2025 season opening weekend, a major storm system is expected to bring the best part of a metre (40”) of snowfall to the country’s ski areas from Saturday, over the first four days of the season.
Aussie ski areas did see a few good snowfalls in May and overnight lows for the past few weeks have allowed snowmakers to build up bases on a few runs for opening day on the 7th, but the incoming snowstorm could be a real game changer.
Almost all Australian ski areas expect to open this Saturday, the exceptions being Selwyn Resort and Charlotte Pass which will wait another fortnight. The rest though aim to make the most of the early-season long weekend with Monday 9th a public holiday to celebrate King Charles 3rd’s birthday.
After a mammoth run of snowmaking in the past 72 hours, continued freezing temps, and a dusting of natural snow, the country’s largest resort, Perisher, says its kids and beginners area will be open along with a mini park on Front Valley. "There’s also a chance the V8 will spin,” …which would mean a skiable run for experienced skiers, a resort spokesman said.
Thredbo has confirmed that their Friday Flat run will be open and Mt Buller has been using their five all-weather snowmaking machines on top of the regular equipment to ensure that they can open some terrain too.
At Falls Creek the team is closely monitoring the forecast and stands ready to open lifts for skiing and boarding as soon as it's safe to do so, but currently nothing is confirmed for opening weekend.
“Our team has worked incredibly hard to bring the mountain to life for opening weekend, and we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved together,” said Richard Phillips, Vice President and General Manager of Falls Creek Ski Lifts.
As with other Australian resorts, there’s plenty of snow in the forecast for Hotham this weekend, and the snow guns have been firing since May 18. First-timers and little shredders will be able to take their first turns on the snow thanks to the newly relocated Pup’s beginner carpet running. However again no main runs confirmed to open, although a spokesperson commented,
“ With more snowfall and perfect snowmaking conditions in the forecast, there may be more good news to share as the weekend progresses.”
