Why Golden?
Located 3 hours west of Calgary International Airport, Golden, BC, is one of Canada’s most iconic winter vacation destinations. As you head west from Calgary, you’ll notice you pass four well-known resorts; you may be asking yourself, why Golden? What sets this place apart from the rest?

First Things First… Kicking Horse Mountain Resort
Over 4,000 feet of vertical, five alpine bowls, more than 3,400 acres of skiable terrain, and a reputation as a multi-year host of the Freeride World Tour. Need we say more?
One of the best things about Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is that a single powder day can stretch into an entire week, with fresh lines waiting to be discovered as more terrain opens up. Whether you're stepping straight off the gondola, hopping on an alpine chairlift, or earning your turns with a short hike to legendary terrain like O-Zone, there's always another adventure waiting.
And while Kicking Horse is famous for its steep chutes, deep powder, and jaw-dropping mountain views, there's plenty of room for those who prefer to take it easy. With beautifully groomed runs and family-friendly terrain, you don't have to chase the steep and deep to experience the magic of the mountain.

Incredible Access to Backcountry Bliss
With the birthplace of commercial heli-skiing just down the road in the Bugaboos, and more than 25 backcountry lodges scattered throughout the surrounding mountains, Golden has earned some serious bragging rights. The nearby Rogers Pass in Glacier National Parks has an average of 14 meters of snowfall a year at treeline. Rogers Pass is a popular backcountry ski touring destination with extremely complex terrain. You must obtain a winter permit to access Rogers.
For those looking to escape the crowds and venture beyond the chairlifts, Golden offers endless opportunities for soft, pillowy, earned turns. However, the backcountry is no place for guesswork. Hiring a certified local guide is one of the best ways to explore safely. With extensive knowledge of the terrain, snowpack, and avalanche conditions, guides help manage risks while leading you toward unforgettable skiing. Whether you're a first-timer or seasoned powder chaser, local expertise makes all the difference.

What to do When the Day is Done
The adventure doesn't stop when the ski boots come off! After a day of chasing powder at the resort or in the backcountry, downtown Golden is calling your name. With a variety of restaurants, a local brewery, and a distillery, there's no shortage of places to kick back, refuel, and swap stories from the day's adventures (helmet hair and Gore-Tex encouraged!).
If your legs are calling for a break from steep climbs and big descents, slow things down with a visit to one of Golden's cozy cafés or switch gears and explore 33 km of groomed cross-country ski trails at Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre. Whether you're chasing adrenaline, embracing a slower pace, or simply soaking up the mountain-town atmosphere, Golden has a little something for every kind of winter adventurer.
