Weekly Snow News for Europe, updated 23 April 2026: Alpine season winds down with under 100 resorts open, freeze-thaw above 2,000m and mostly dry spring conditions.

Europe Intro

Europe’s ski season continues to wind down, with fewer than 100 ski areas still open. Most major Alpine nations report only 5–10 centres operating, generally those with high-altitude or glacier terrain. Temperatures have gradually risen over the past week, although freeze-thaw conditions persist above 2,000m.

Conditions have been mostly dry, with only light rain, sleet or snow showers reported. Most resorts in the Dolomites and Pyrenees are now closed, while Eastern Europe’s season ended last weekend, including Slovakia’s Jasna.


Austria Snow Report

Temperatures have been slightly cooler than last week, with the freezing point around 2,000m. High-altitude areas remain near freezing, dropping to –10°C overnight at 3,000m. Lower slopes and valleys have seen temperatures above +10°C. Most of Austria’s remaining open resorts are now limited to terrain above 1,800m. Hintertux (0/305cm / 0/122") has the deepest snowpack and retains 90% of its terrain. Ischgl currently offers the most extensive skiing, with over 200km (125 miles) of slopes still open.

Conditions remain mostly settled above 1,800m. Summit temperatures range from –8°C to –5°C, rising towards –3°C to 0°C by the weekend. Freezing levels climb well above 2,000m.

Precipitation will be limited, with only occasional weak showers. Snowfall will be restricted to the highest glacier slopes.


France Snow Report

A largely sunny week across the French Alps, with only light snowfall on high slopes over the weekend. Freezing levels have ranged between 2,000m and 2,500m. Around nine resorts remain open, with several set to close this weekend. Les 2 Alpes (40/335cm / 16/134") has the deepest base. Tignes and Val d’Isere continue to offer extensive terrain, with around 270km (167 miles) still skiable.

France Snow Forecast
Mild, spring-like conditions continue. Summit temperatures will rise from –4°C to –1°C up to 0°C to +4°C before cooling again early next week.

Freezing levels remain high, with most precipitation falling as rain, except for occasional snow on the highest glaciers.

Italy Snow Report

Only a handful of ski areas remain open in Italy, most aiming to operate into May. Cervinia (0/90cm / 0/36") offers the most accessible terrain, shared with ZermattPonte di Legno (40/200cm / 18/80") has the deepest snowpack. Elsewhere, conditions have been mostly dry and sunny, with valley temperatures reaching +20°C. Occasional wintry showers continue at altitude, with freezing levels dipping to around 2,000m overnight.

High-alpine temperatures range from –6°C to –3°C, rising towards –2°C to +2°C. Conditions remain stable with mostly dry weather and limited snowfall at the highest elevations.


Switzerland Snow Report

Fewer than ten Swiss resorts remain open. Several major areas have recently closed, with more set to follow this weekend. Conditions mirror the wider Alps, with sunny weather, freezing levels between 1,500m and 2,500m, and occasional snow flurries at higher elevations. Six areas will remain open next week, including Zermatt and Diavolezza Glacier.

Spain Snow Report

The Pyrenees season is nearly over, with only a few resorts still operating. La Molina/Massella (40/200cm / 16/80") and Sierra Nevada (0/380cm / 0/152") remain open. Conditions have been mostly sunny with occasional rain, and freezing levels around 3,000m. Daytime temperatures have reached +10°C at altitude and higher in valleys.

Mild spring weather continues, with freezing levels well above 2,000m. Sierra Nevada remains colder at higher elevations, with a small chance of light snow showers.


Scandinavia Snow Report

Scandinavia continues to offer strong late-season conditions, with sunshine and occasional snow showers. Freeze-thaw cycles persist across most elevations. Temperatures range from –5°C to –10°C at higher altitudes. Many larger resorts remain open, with Åre offering around 80% of terrain.

Scotland Snow Report

Cairngorm remains the only operational ski area after Glencoe ended lift-served skiing. Recent mild weather has reduced snow cover, though touring remains possible. Cairngorm reported 5cm (2") of fresh snowfall earlier this week, with best conditions in the Ptarmigan Bowl.
