Alps Snow Report

Only around a dozen ski areas remain open across Europe after most resorts ended their 2025/26 seasons following the first weekend of May. Countries where the last remaining ski areas closed included Scotland, Germany and Spain, while glacier resorts continue operating across the Alps and Scandinavia.

Cairngorm, Scotland: 1st May 2026.

Austria now offers the widest remaining choice, with Stubai open until 17 May, Kaunertal and Kitzsteinhorn operating through the end of the month, and Hintertux continuing into July. France is now down to Les 2 Alpes, which reported Europe’s biggest snowfall of the week with 20cm (8") accumulating on its glacier by Wednesday. Italy still has Cervinia and Val Senales open, although the latter closes after this weekend.

Kitzsteinhorn, Austria: 1st May 2026.

Switzerland is represented solely by Zermatt, which continues year-round skiing on slopes reaching 3,899m. Hintertux continues to report both the deepest snowpack and the most terrain available, with more than 40km (25 miles) of runs still open. Conditions have generally remained sunny across the Alps, with freezing levels mostly between 2,000m and 3,000m. Occasional light snow showers have developed over glaciers while rain has fallen lower down.

Zermatt, Switzerland: 1st May 2026.

Alps Snow Forecast
Mostly mild spring weather continues across the Alps with limited new snowfall expected. Forecasts show increasingly settled conditions into the weekend, with temperatures climbing toward +10C to +15C at mid-mountain elevations.

Alps snow forecast for the next 3-6 days.

Scandinavia Snow Report

Most Scandinavian resorts have now closed despite the region still offering Europe’s coldest late-season temperatures. Finland’s Ruka completed a seven-month season after opening in early October, while Levi remains open until at least this Sunday. Sweden’s Riksgransen, north of the Arctic Circle, has now entered its famous period of skiing beneath the midnight sun.

Levi, Finland: 4 May 2026.

Norway’s regular winter resorts have all closed, although the Galdhøpiggen glacier summer ski area is scheduled to open this weekend. Temperatures across Lapland have ranged from -6C overnight on higher slopes to +8C at lower elevations during afternoons, with some areas receiving 5-10cm (2-4") of fresh snowfall.

Scandinavia Snow Forecast
A cooler, unsettled pattern brings mixed rain and snow showers before drier weather develops later in the weekend. Temperatures are expected to gradually rise toward 11C to 14C across lower elevations.

Scandinavia snow forecast for the next 3-6 days.
