The lifts are almost destroyed, many bars are missing. You're waiting in line and many people are skipping their place in the lift line. Even though there are two seater chairlift and T-bars, many people are riding singles on their own, frustrating the people waiting in line. One mother with 7 year old child didn't know how to scan the lift ticket, and some guy from the staff started yelling to the young child and the mother. I was disgusted from his behaviour. There was some guy skiing like crazy, he could hurt someone. Somebody told me that he acts like this ski are is his own (his grandpa used to be a politician), measuring how fast he's skiing. Watch for you own safety, no one cares about nothing here. Four lifts are not working, even on weekends when there are many people. They are charging a full priced lift ticket even though some runs are closed, and some of the lifts are not running at all. Save your money and go somewhere else. Don't pay for non working lifts, flat runs, rude patrollers and managers and expensive bars. The lifties, on the other hand, are very nice people, and I feel sorry for them: they work like crazy, but they don't get paid enough, don't get gloves, hats, goggles, glasses and boots. Obviously, money is wasted for marketing, instead to pay and buy gear for the hardworking lifties.
Although small, it's a very cosy and fun ski center. In good season offers perfect skiing. The lifts are short, but if you have good route planning you can connect the whole mountain and get some serious piste skiing.
Definitely not the mainstream, which makes this ski center have its own character.
The ski patrol MZSS at the moment works with the latest standards of international ski patroller association (FIPS) and the unit is consisted of heavy duty professionals with serious training to respond in every situation.
There are several bars up there that offer food and drinks and some party programs.
Al in all, small place with big character.
I visit this ski area almost my whole life. A couple of years ago, I've witnessed a dangerous behavior of most of the member of the ski patrol: One young guy (14 or 15 years old, I don't know how the local laws allow him to work in the ski patrol) tried to tie the huge pad on one of the towers of a popular ski-lift. Obviously, he didn't tie the pad as he should and the pad started to slide down the ski slope. Luckily, noone was hurt by the sliding flying tower pad. Watch out for your safety when ski patrollers are near you in Mavrovo.
This is probably the worst ski mountain in Europe.
All the trails are flat. It's hard to get enough speed on this mountain to even cut a turn. It's so flat that when there is powder, you just stop because there's not enough inertia to make you move. If an engineer tried to plan a worse trail map, he couldn't do a worse job than the guy who designed this mountain. Utterly horrible.
However, the lodges and bars on the mountain are perfect and it's recommended to leave your skis at home and go only for the afterparty.
Do not go skiing in Mavrovo, they do not level the terrains except for two steep slopes. All other terrains are not groomed except on Saturdays and Sundays. It's easy to get hurt. The staff is very rude.
What a disappointment; we have all been waiting for years for this place to get it together.
When there is snow the staff at Zare don't know how to manage it. They don't even use the snow blowers. When there isn't snow they don't offer alternative activities to keep the place running. It's like they want to lose money. I wonder why? ! :-) ...
Another sad Macedonian story.
Go to Bulgaria instead.
WHY IS THERE NO DATA ON THE CURRENT SNOW COVER THICKNESS IN MAVROVO?
[Editor's reply. We have obtained regular snow reports for approximately 1500 out of 2500 ski resorts. Mavrovo (Zare Lazarevski) is currently not one of these. Sorry about that. We provide various ways for resort managers and local skiers to submit snow reports online. The simplest it to use twitter. See http://www.snow-forecast.com/pages/eyeball_report. With twitter you can simply send a text message and it will appear on our site right away. We hope that this new feature will allow us to increase the proportion of resorts with regular snow reports]
There is snow today but not enough for skiing. At the bottom almost 30cm snow, but higher at the slopes due to the strong wind there is almost none. It's freezing!
For further information regarding the skiing conditions in the next days call the Ski Center: 00389 42 489 065. I haven't tried yet calling this number but I hope it will work!
