Hi, going to Valfrejus this Friday. Has anybody been there recently and can say something about the current snow, lift and run conditions? Has it really returned to the bad state from the former very well improved state???
How about doing something on the day of arrival, other than skiing, what do you suggest to do when arriving early in the morning and having to wait till 5 pm to access the rooms?
At Valfrejus now and for the last 4-5 days - 2 more days left for me there.
New gondola and chair lift from the plato are fine.
Problems I see at the moment are with:
1.the grooming of the runs - no Kasborher - ski basher can be seen working. Runs in the morning far from prepared for tourists.
2.opening of the runs - looks like the staff arrive not before opening but exactly at the times listed and starts clearing the snow, the sits and the approaches while the tourists are looking waiting and waiting.
(Local tourist office at Valfrejus take notice: you have an issue with staff and it is crystal clear to everybody here.)
3. timetable keeping - all sorts of excuses are given for some lifts not to work or runs not done.
Looks like there are some savings to be made this season and the well being of the runs, lifts and the experiences of the tourist which have decided to visit this little jewel at Valfrejus to suffer.
Hope more positive feedback after things get better later on.
Wow. The snow at Valfrejus was fantastic and we had sun everyday bar one so coming back from a skiing holiday with a brown face was a bonus. The slopes were absolutely fabulous. Well worth the trip to Aussois and La Norma as your lift pass covers these two resorts as well. If you have your own car it is really easy to drive to; only 20 mins, and well worth it. The slopes in Aussois are south facing and long. Valfrejus is a long way from Calais but if you are sharing the drive it is motorways all the way and easy apart from Lyon which was a bit tricky. Valfrejus is about 20 mins off the end of the motorway and well worth it. Seemed to be quite sheltered in a little valley. We couldn't access the apartment until 5.00 p.m. so had to wait in the pub and watch the rugby. Although we did cope it was inconvenient as all we wanted to do was crash out and catch up with some sleep. We stayed in Chalet De La Florence. It was compact but very comfortable and only 50 metres from the gondola. We had our Welsh Flag on the balcony for all to see as the gondola passed directly by us. Would definitely return to the area and would recommend it.
The best ski conditions this February at Valfrejus. Probably the best in the whole Maurienne Valley.
-all lifts open
-all runs open
-4-5 snow bashers working their job and every morning ideal grooming
-perfect conditions
-snow is in great condition
On top of this there are free concerts and apres-ski activities. Good job Valfrejus Tourists Office.
Great news for next winter: the old gondola at Valfrejus will be replaced with a state of the art 8 seater with one to the middle station and from there to the top with a fast 6 seater chair.
The gondola has started so I've got to go skiing.

For the first time ever I drove to a skiing holiday. I went to Valfrejus. Not for the fainthearted. The 600 mile drive from Calais is not one to be done on your own. But if you do, Valfrejus is a great destination. It is practically motorways to the first hairpin of the mountain (although 85 euros there and the same back).
The resort itself was in no way Anglofied, which is no bad thing if you are there for just the skiing, which I was, with my 3 kids. It's a fairly modern looking town and the lift system is very easily accessible from any part of the town.
The ski area is great and has a lot of challenging north facing run that, if there is a lack of frequent snow and the temperatures stay low enough, stay in great condition. Piste were always tided up in the morning and the signage is good for finding where you want to go.
I was impressed with the ski circuit and the town was a little quiet, but pleasant. It is very accessible and I would recommend it to any experienced skier.
We first visited Valfrejus in March 2007, looking for a ski apartment. We fell in love with the place; great snow, friendly people and cheap prices. We returned in August 2007 and bought an apartment. The prices are excellent compared to other resorts. I think Valfrejus has real potential. We have bought though and now we can now ski for 2 weeks instead of one package holiday with our 2 children. We are also now going at peak times, we could never have done this before.
We skied in January and February 2008, had great conditions and met some friendly people, I think I know Colin (below), hi.
I'm coming again January with the boys, February with the family and hopefully sneaking a cheeky one in at the end of March beginning of April.
The snow is falling at Valfrejus in the bucket load, it's going to be a great season, am looking forward to meeting up with old friends. Enjoy your sliding.
Seasonal lift passes for us this time round-so cheap!! Great value if planning being at least 2 weeks in there.
Escapism from the doom and gloom.
Just praying for a lot of the white stuff.
See you at the opening!
Valfrejus and Maurienne here we come!!
Last season was a great one for us, not only good snow but managed to go to Valfrejus twice. If you are thinking of buying a place in the Alpes you could do a lot worse than here. We had the good fortune to buy a place last year and can't wait to go out again this season. For value, I believe there is nowhere better in the Alpes. You will not be disappointed. If you are looking for somewhere to stay the chalet de florence is very and close to the main lift, bars and restaurants all not bad at all.
This winter (in Feb) the ski runs were in top condition. Snow bashers were out every night to prepare them. I saw brand new snow tracker on the 14th Feb. Something tells me this resort is on the up and has a BIG future. Maybe not immediately but soon. The clientele is getting better, the place is lively and, at the same time, is preserving the mountain feel with very strict building planning laws enforced so the views are cosy.
The only negative was the closure of the Charmasson and together with Ramoure on the Saturdays, with NO CLEAR REASONS. This is the 3 sat in Feb. Suspect they were doing it for savings. Unlucky for all those staying in this end of the resort on these days because they have to walk to Gondola although having ski-to-door accommodation. But that is a small moan compared with the overall experience which is 9 out of 10 for us. Definitely will go there again.
Actually the runs this February were prepared very well. New piste basher was delivered in Feb to complement the 3-4 already in action. Every night I could hear the bashers doing the runs and every morning every run was in perfect condition. One moan is the state of the lifts on Saturdays. On 3 occasions I have found that the Charmasson Ramoure and few on top end of the resort were NOT WORKING-when asked for reasons -the staff gave a reason-problems with the cable on one sat on the other -another one- but heard that this is done on purpose to do some savings and with this to annoy the people staying in the Charmasson end of the resort. Otherwise, everything else was good: the runs, no queues, friendly people, no crowds-on Saturdays and we had the ski runs to ourselves. I sense there will be a lot of improvement for this resort. It has to happen because it is the closest place you can reach from a motorway in the Alps. The resort is very charming and the off-piste skiing is very good. Will definitely go there again.
