Hello,
It appears some reviewers are getting confused! Sun Peaks Resort is the second largest ski area in BC with 3,678 acres over 3 different mountains. The resort is 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops. Silver Star has approximately 3,000 acres and a much smaller village (located mid-mountain) and is about 30 minutes from Vernon. The two are quite different from one another! At the base of the 3 mountains, Sun Peaks offers a modern, ski-through village and all hotels are ski-in, ski-out including the 4-star Delta Resort which is beautiful and the service, excellent.
Silver Star and Sun Peaks are two totally separate ski resorts. Silver Star is about 1.5 hours away in Vernon. Sun Peaks is much bigger than Silver Star. Sun Peaks is second only to Whistler/Blackcomb in BC for size and Whistler is the biggest in North America, I believe.
There are some fairly challenging blacks on Morrissey at Sun Peaks.
Just came back from 4 days in Sun Peaks in Feb 2009. This is a peculiar resort; second biggest acreage in BC (Canada?) but it feels smaller than some others. This is possibly due to the 'skiable acres' being, in some parts, thickly wooded trees so that the runs available make this place feel smaller than it claims. But having said that the runs available at Silver Star (including glades) are enjoyable for intermediates/improvers but not much more than that. Beginners & fans of cruisy blues will love it. The blacks listed here would be blue elsewhere; double blacks would be singles. The 3 mountains offer a variety of style of runs: Sundance = easy open cruising blues, Morrisey = tree lined blue runs, not difficult but very pretty & fun to swoosh through through, Tod Mountain = supposed to be the black area but not a great challenge. The lift(s) on Tod are old and very slow. In the 'village' at Silver Star there are 8/9 restaurants/bars for apres-ski/evening meals with different styles e.g sushi, Italian (including pizza), contemporary Canadian/fusion and a steak house.
Fun to ski at Silver Star for 2 days, maybe 3 for good intermediates but not much more than that. We were there for Weds - Sat & Fri/Sat were far busier than the weekdays. Kamloops is close by & residents will visit at weekends. However, any skiers at European resorts will still find the 'busy' days at SP (Silver Star) far emptier than slow days at most European resorts.
In february 2005 I spent a couple of days in Sun Peaks. I loved it! A nice compact village and really nice people. The mountain is not that big but offers some great variety. The slopes are uncrowded and the sceneries are just beautiful with unlimited view. I think Sun Peaks has some of the tree-skiing oppotunities which was special to me. The West bowl offers some nice steep terrain. The mountain hosts, Sun Guides, are great. One conclusion, check it out!

Spent to whole of the 03/04 season in Sun Peaks teaching for the Snowsports School. Having skied in a great deal of the world's premier resorts I did not know what to expect. I found a lot more than I could have hoped.
Sun Peaks is a great destination for families. Not only is the village compact enough to allow you to get around and participate in all the activities but it has the charm of a traditional alpine village too. Nightlife is a little limited but that means you get to meet a lot more people quickly and you will end up hanging out with the locals and workers. Some of the friendliest people I have ever met.
The skiing/boarding is fantastic. Beginners have the chance to get to the top of the hill on day 1! Intermidiates are in heaven, too many runs to choose from. Advanced skiers and boarders have some steep bump fields, lots of glades and open bowls (making up 32% of the terrain). The powder is the best snow I have ever skied in (and I do mean in). For the jibbers amongst us there is a halfpipe and a slope-style course.
Cost of living is very cheap compared the anywhere in France, Austria, Italy or Switzerland. A pound a pint isn't bad anywhere.
A little tricky to get to but well worthwhile. 60% the size of Whistler with only 15% of the skiers/boarders.
Go there!!!!!!!
