We will be going to Schladming again in 2010 - our 3rd stay at the wonderful Hotel Stattdor. The food is really good and the owners are very welcoming. The hotel bar has a great atmosphere.
The ski terrain at Schladming suits all, from beginners to advanced, there is something for everyone. The town has the feel of a real Austrian town, not just a purpose built ski resort and there are some very good bars and restaurants.
This is a hidden gem - few tourist companies go to Schladming and it has a very cosmopolitan feel.
I'm a Brit and have been living in Schladming for over 6 years and there must be a positive reason for this. As mentioned by many, it looks nice, it is not overrun with people, the mountain huts are affordable, the bars in the town have humane prices. Snow is damn good and to tell you the truth I'm not sure why people head to France, must be the expensive baguettes and busy lift systems.
Just to point out though, Rauris is nowhere near Schladming. And there are kids ski schools on the Planai and Hochwurzen.
If you want backcountry, it is here at Schladming but you have to find it. We do have secrets you know. And on sunny days you can try your freeride skills on the Dachstein glacier if you know what you are doing.
At Schladming we also now have a good park on the Planai, freestyle snowboard school and a damn good shop: Blue Tomato.
Enjoy.

Skied there (Schladming) over New Year. Absolutely booked up, so I had to stay 20 minutes drive away, and still virtually no queues. Great intermediate snow area, though not challenging for the advanced types. Reliable snow, even last year, at low level. So no altitude acclimatisation. Night skiing and toboggan run. Very reasonable costs at the huts on the mountains. I am taking the kids back in a month, mking it three trips there in 13 months. Try Habersetter Reisen for very reasonable coach transfer from Salzburg. It really is under the hour. What more can one say.
Great skiing at Schladming in a town that looks alpine - not like some of the concrete monstrosities. Fantastic variety of slopes; open, tree lined, wide, narrow and great food on the mountain. Friendly locals and no queue jumping. Plenty to do on a rest day too. Try Schladming once and you'll probably get hooked like most others, as I have for the last 20 years. Enjoy this superb excellent all round resort.

As a family we have skied Schladming 5 seasons in the last 7 years. Very good lift system and always improving, very good food at reasonable prices on the mountain. Ski School for kids is very good especially Tritcher based at Rhormoos.
Ski show on Sunday nights when all the ski schoolls strut their stuff is excellent. If you haven't tried Schladming then I advise you do so, nothing to fault it really except when the exchange rate to the Euro is not in our favour.
Been skiing in Schladming for the last 25 years, with 45 skiing trips under my feet it's still worth the return, for great huts and food, excellent slope manner of the locals.
My tip is don't stick to the main slopes, there is plenty to find on the links and areas covered by the ticket.
Great lift system and huts for food, beats the best of France. Not as mad as Verbier or High Alps for "Back Country" skiing but with speed cannons, parks, race tracks, night skiing etc...
You should add it to your list, always updating and improving.
Great resort, lots of choice and great apres-ski. Went in early April and ski conditions were great above middle station and snow making below. Stayed at the Posthotel which was superb. The only downside is that it is an expensive area (probably due to it being a world cup resort).
We are about to return for our 5th visit. Poor snow last year in January but still good skiing above middle station. Reports look great for this next week. Keep the secret!

Will be returning to Schladming for the third time in January having been there the last two seasons. Have skied France, Switzerland, Canada and many other places in Austria but this place takes some beating. Friendly locals, good food, great ski area with 4 interlinked mountains and a glacier. There was still plenty of skiing, even last year, when the snow in Europe wasn't so good. A variety of hotels and a few more bars in the town have meant that the apres-ski has improved. On the mountain there are plenty of huts and they serve very good food at reasonable prices. Haven't got kids so can't comment on how it rates for families but for anyone else it is a must if going to Austria. Then again, go somewhere else and it will keep the lift queues down and the slopes uncrowded for the wife and I!

I've been skiing since I was 3 and skiing in Schladming since I was 6. I am now 19 and have skied Canada, France and Italy and nothing comes close to Schladming! I love the mountains, pistes, village and all the people. It's like my second home and I can't wait to return in February. The skiing is always fantastic and I hope to, one day, live there teaching skiing!
