January 2016 will see my 14th season visiting Saalbach-Hinterglemm. I've been going there every year. sometimes twice a year, since 2003 when the British Police started having their race championships there (Ex cop). I've skied many other resorts, having been a BASI qualified instructor, but not yet found anywhere else to beat this resort. Excellent skiing for all standards, slightly harder slopes in Hinterglemm. Looking forward to using the Fieberbrunn slopes this winter as they merge with that resort. The lift company invest heavily every year, upgrading lifts, mostly heated, canopied 6/8 seater chairs. The groomers are always out. Apres-ski is a French term, but the Austrians do it so much better.

I have been visiting Saalbach for over 4 years now and I think the maintenance of the ski slopes is very good. Yes, sometimes when it is snowing heavily they do tend to leave the piste bashing until the end of the day but more often than not the piste conditions are superb and well maintained. The skiing is suitable for every standard and has some great lively bars on the slope. Night life is great in Hinterglemm & Saalbach. When there I stay in a lovely traditional style apartment in the nearby Village of Viehhofen. The Apartment is called Gretl and it is located in Chalet Alte Bachmuhle; very competitive on price and an excellent location. It can be found on the internet easily.

Hi, we arrive in Saalbach on the 8th Feb and looking at the 9 day forecast i'm wondering if I'm going to need my wetsuite and waterskis this year. I have been an avid user of this website for many years and always subscribe but iIm afraid this will be my last year. Every year it gets (us skiers or boarders) hopes up in the 9 day forecast with predictions of heavy snow and within hrs its changed to minimal snowfall. It never changes for the better only for the worst so c'mon snow-forcast get your act together and just tell us the truth! No bull@!:t I know the weather is what it is and nobody can change that but at least don't get our hopes up and then drop it like a stone. Just the truth will do!! Love Austria but when you only have 1 week to get it right maybe it's time to look higher!! [note from the editor: thank you for your feedback; this type of post is better placed in the Guestbook.]

Avoid Saalbach during snow falls. When it snows they just do not groom slopes at all. The best example was today (January 27, 2014). Horrible experience on 2a/2b slope for 48 Euro. Real circus. It looks like the last time this slope saw a snowcat was in April when it drove to the garage down the hill for summer break. The other slopes were not much better. Congratulations to the preparation team and its management. You should learn your job from e.g. Stubai, Fiss-Ladis, St. Moritz and couple other preparation teams.

To another reviewer: Glad that you think that Saalbach is great. Yes, I think it gets better year on year. If you are coming back next year why don't you try this apartment. 600 metres from the Schattberg Xpress and town. our link - saalbachapartment.com

Jan 2014 will be our groups fourth visit in a row to Saalbach and it it just seems to get better every year! We have had mixed weather in January but, as we ski in almost any conditions, it takes a lot to confine us to resort. The last 2 years have seen plenty of snow. The lift system always seems to have a new or updated chair lift added each year and we rarely have to queue at the lifts, so it is easy to find the best pistes to match your level. We are intermediate/advanced and have never run out of good pistes. The mountain restaurants are great. Traditional Austrian food is served by friendly staff. If you have a chance, try a trip to Zell am See or Kaprun. There are plenty of shops to keep you busy and the village is very pretty. Apres-ski is a must in Saalbach with plenty of bars at the bottom of the runs-try The Goat Bar at the end of the run into Hinterglem, there is a short 'swoosh' from the bar to the lift station so don't over do it!! There is a great atmosphere in this resort and that is what makes it good for couples and families, we love it and having skied all over Europe, we think it has all we need and can't wait to be back there in Jan 2014!

At Saalbach apartment. Fantastic place with all your family would need. The apartment sleeps five and is wonderfully located to the lifts and town. Going back year after year. Great family and couples resorts of Saalbach and Hinterglemm.

Love the place. The skiing is wonderful and so too are the people, food, restaurants, etc. There is an immense amount of skiing so it does not get boring. Haus Kong, Saalbach.

Spent a week in Saalbach in Feb 2012. We were extremely lucky with the weather, huge amount of snow the week before we arrived and then sunshine for our week, lovely. Obviously, weather is different year on year but what I can say is that the resort was really well prepared. The pistes were lovely, long, winding, alpine views, really pretty. We also went in peak time and although it was very busy the organisation of the lofts was really good, no massive queue's and when there were queues they moved really quickly. Some little touches that we appreciated were: 1) the food was really lovely pretty much everywhere, you have to have goulash in Austria it's outstanding. 2) Only the really pricey accommodation is right by the gondolas everything else is approx 5/10 mins walk away. The Shatenberg gondola has ski lockers so you can leave your skis in the lockers after skiing (save walking and carrying them to and from everyday). Also a good touch if you are keen on a bit of apres! 3) There is a fantastic run from Leogang all the way to Saalbach, with great bars that have follow the hour happy hour, the pistes are blue's / easy reds so a few drinks aren't too dangerous ;) the run all the way to Leogang is also pretty amazing, it's about 15km depending on the route you take. 4) Free style ski/snowboarder shows in the evening were really good fun to watch. In short, lots of variety, linked to Leogang and Hinterglemm so loads of area to cover. Although we didn't have any kids with us, there were loads of children there too so assume it is a good place if you have kids. Definitely recommend.

Skied Feb 3-10 - very cold but fantastic skiing - great for intermediates. Snow brilliant, lift system great - chair lifts with heated seats and covers - great when temp is -20. Mountain restaurants - service, food, cleanliness - second to none. This was the first time we had returned to a resort and will definitely be returning.
