I have to laugh at some of the reviews because Red Resort (and Rossland) is possibly the friendliest place on the planet. Yes, the skiing is rather rural; not perfectly manicured like many of our sterile factory big name resorts. But the skiing is off the hook for those keen to ski long steep fall lines. There are little to no closed signs so ski at your risk and enjoy the purity of big mountain skiing. The town and people are super fun albeit the options are somewhat limited. In fact, you may end up at a house party with new-found friends if you're not careful.
Red's got a lot of tree skiing with a lot of broken dangerous branches and many, many little surprises along the way. Having lived here for a while I suspect it’s left that way on purpose, Mountain bike trails are same: right at eye level you most likely find nasty spike branches and little surprises litter bike trails also. Locals don’t depend on tourism. In fact, they are, for most part, working at the lead mine which pumps some serious toxin into the local air all day everyday. Rossland and Red are two different places altogether. In the village you’ll find smiling faces and a brand new hotel and a couple of hostels even. I’d avoid nightlife in Rossland, As I said, it’s a rough lead minded attitude that hates newcomers and visitors.
Awesome on all levels. Amazing skiing, great people, great town. Tons of high quality recreation, food, beverage and good times at the resort and in Rossland.
Red is a very dangerous place to ski because of the young cowboy Yahoo!'s there. They ski super fast and out of control and the ski patrol does nothing to stop them or enforce the ski protocols and rules.
I witnessed a middle age woman get run over last week and had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries and she cannot ski the rest of the season, if ever again. The man that ran her over just skied away!
Terrible place.
Fun place to ski. I would love it even more if the investment had been in fast detachable quads instead of condos and condo access. Imagine how much fun this place would be if instead of lodging development it had fast chairs and live music in Rafters everyday. If you catch Red after a dump you will love it.
Skied here so many times its hard to remember it all. You can ski Red, Granite, Grey, Roberts and Kirkup mountains and if you are in shape, Record ridge and Plewman and Old Glory. Nowhere else can you ski all that. All serviced by chairlifts except Plewman and Old Glory, which you have to tour to. Look, don't come here if you want lineups, hard snow, wanabie groupies, endless nightlife and high cost. Come here if you want to ski till you can't take it no more. Most years it's endless snow champagne powder, Odd year less snow but always snow and endless runs with nobody on them; it's so big you hardly see others. If you want to ski come here. Otherwise, go somewhere else, they will take all your money and you will never know what skiing is really all about.
2015/16 great snow. Superb accommodations. 4 mountains
to ski. Bus to & from hill 10 minutes. Available every hour.
Beautiful setting. Great food @ Flying Steamshovel, Alpine Grind,
Gabrialla's, and more. Boutique shopping.
Quaint town 5 min from hill.
This year has been a lean year for snow. Terrain is awesome, snow coverage has been poor (rock city). Check the historical snow fall. This has been a rare year but many come close. Poor brushing, limited grooming (two cats for 4,000 acres) and lots of rock. You figure it out. Lots of snow this place would be top 5. Poor snow, well, pretty tough unless your idea of fun is core shots! Undecided if I'll come back! Town is quiet. I do mean quiet, If all you want to do is ski and it's snowing you're in heaven, otherwise well it's not hell but is is boring!
Best ski hill around for a reason. No we aren't Whistler and don't want to be. Ya, our chairs aren't the fastest, might not have the nightlife etc, but, I guarantee, strap the skis on and we will show you how it's supposed to be done and if you are still going to whine strap on a pair and go to a different mtn. Leave the freshies for the locals and the tourists who appreciate it!
I rode at Red for 6 years. Overall, great terrain and often good snow. They don't do enough to keep the runs free of brush, so on a low snow season you will be tangling with it. There are fewer runs as they claim, since some runs seem to have more than one name, depending on where you are on them. They are, however, adding more runs on a third mountain, with a new (used) lift to be installed in summer 2013. The lifts are slow, old and tend to break down a lot. The food sold at the hill is average at best. Last 3 years I've gone to Whitewater. They get a lot more snow (compare the snow stats for yourself), it's a little colder, so the snow is better, the terrain is very similar to Red's, the lifts are about the same, but they don't break down as often and the lines are smaller. The food at the cafe in the lodge is fantastic. And Nelson is an awesome ski town - Rossland is smaller, and has few things going for it other than the fact that it is only 5 minutes from the ski hill.
