Buller is awesome!! Of all the Aussie ski resorts, this one has the best sense of township and community. The USA does have way better snow and a lot more people around to help, however, they do rely on tips as their wages are minimal and there's like millions of them compared to the Australian population... But when you're at Buller it's impossible not to have fun! I mean it's snoooowwwww! The guy complaining about the taxis.... Get over it. What real guy goes on a trip to the snow and does not think that the car will be covered in some sort of snow after 5 days or quite frankly thinks that it's the 'locals' job to be your servants. Mate, not the taxis fault for someone being a tad bit silly now is it.

To another reviewer: ski holidays are hands on activities for those who can handle and understand the elements. If you don't understand the possible implications of parking a car up the mountain then don't take one. There's plenty of easier alternatives. Don't expect a limited number of resort staff to hold your hand the whole time, information like whether chains are required on any given day is easily obtainable before you set off.

Mount Buller is not "private", it is crown land run by a government appointed resort management board. How that connects to laws about loads on roof racks I'm not sure. In over 100 trips in the taxis I've never had luggage fall off. Maybe frozen on? Having said that - the car park - village transport is probably the biggest drag about staying overnight. Heading up is organised well. The wait on Sunday afternoon to get down can be painful. And after paying the return fare everything else on the mountain seems like a bargain! There are no crowds midweek and only in peak season when snow levels are down and advanced lifts are closed do the queues get beyond 5 mins (Wombat and Holden excluded).

If you want good snow and service go to the USA. The skiing in the USA is much better than in Australia because of altitude. The Americans sure know how to go the extra mile when it comes to pleasing the customer. I think Buller could lift its game a bit in that department and not rely on the fact that it can pull in large numbers of customers easiest because it is 3 hours from Melbourne. Having said that I think Buller has got some quality runs. It is easy to deride detractors but one must remember that it costs a shitload of money to ski in Australia for relatively speaking not much in return. Sara Day

To another reviewer. Employees do not go out of their way to make you have a bad day. Can you imagine if the taxi drivers had to clear everyone's car that they dropped off? You try moving 3000 people in an afternoon. It's quite ridiculous to expect that. A little humility and hard work goes a long way in this world. Did another reviewer actually realise that snow could be icy and wet before you went to Buller? Did you "help" the taxi driver get your luggage onto the roof - or did you just stand there watching? I'm betting the latter. For your information, it is not illegal to carry luggage on the roof at Mt Buller as it is a private resort and not state roads. Get over yourself. Snow can be fun but it can also be a b. nuisance. The taxi drivers and bus drivers work very, very hard up the mountain - something you obviously are not familiar with. Hope you enjoy your next holiday more - perhaps in a spa resort where you are looked after every five minutes?

Of course you are going to get snow on your car after 5 days! Welcome to the outdoors. I'm pretty sure there is a free shuttle that can take you from carpark to village. You had to carry your own bags? Wow, you're at a ski resort in Australia not a hotel in Rome.

Mount Buller, just 3 hrs from Melbourne. We hired a 4x4car and drove up there arriving mid afternoon, the 'Mt Buller whoever people' herd you into a god forsaken carpark about a couple of km from Mt Buller, in the ice and snow. They then proceed to herd you into 'taxis', we call them Toyota personnel carriers, then with your luggage thrown onto roof racks and not secured in anyway, they drive you to Mt Buller for $18.50! No choice here? We were then dumped at the foot of two flights of steps up to the hotel, the lift then takes you up to the lobby, after of course you have dragged your own bags up the icy steps. After a 5 day stay we left at about 815am. The steps out of the hotel were now treacherous (as one of the employees said on arrival, but did nothing about). Our 'taxi' arrived and we discovered that there is more than one carpark! Nobody had told us this, issued us with an ID ticket or anything; as visitors how would we know? Luckily we remembered it was on the right hand side of the road as you came up the mountain. So off we went again with our luggage on the roof rack and again not secured. We arrived at the carpark a few minutes later, there were two other groups there also with taxi drivers, All the cars in the carpark were not just covered in snow but had snow pushed up against the rears of them by whatever vehicle had 'cleared' the carpark. All of the taxis left. We asked our driver what we were supposed to do to clear our car, he suggested we start on the roof. He rapidly left also. Now as the snow was actually more ice than snow, and had been pushed up over the rear doors, starting on the roof was a little ridiculous. Without aid or tools how could people dig out cars in this state? We had a mobile phone so called the hotel, they had no interest at all, stranded with no means to dig ourselves out. Eventually, after 2hrs and the 3 groups helping each other, we got out. No notices anywhere as to whether we needed to fit chains. Was the road blocked? Had there been snow since it had been cleared last? How would tourists know? It turned out the only snow was around the cars in the carpark, again why is all this left to chance, what sort of place leaves its money earners to 'get on with it'? I know of no other State in Australia where so called taxi drivers would deliberately abandon people in a frozen waste, with no tools and no means to return to safety. As I understand it taxi drivers have a duty of care to their fare paying clients, certainly normal human decency would require someone to at least assist, knowing this was the case before we even got to the site, these people are local and very willing to take your money. They, after all, would be doing this every day. We were total strangers and at the mercy of those around to advise us. I am ashamed to say I am an Australian. I know for a fact Western Australians would never leave ill equipped persons in this state. When we hired the 4x4 in Melbourne we asked whether we needed anything for the journey to Mt Buller. We were told to collect snow chains at Mansfield. We were given no indication that we would be left/abandoned in a snowfield. When we collected the snowchains we asked for a demonstration on fitting them, gain no indication that we could need a shovel to dig ourselves out before the snow chains would be of any use! As I understand it, people involved in such industries where clients could be at risk have a duty of care to inform or assist. We, as with the others present, had no knowledge of circumstances or requirements. That is the responsibility of those making money out of these ventures, well at least in other States. It is also illegal to carry 'a load' unsecured on the roof of a road vehicle. I think this shows both the attitude of and the standard of these 'taxi drivers'. A wonderful holiday ruined by those responsible for the safety and well being of the tourists who are only too eager to take money off. Be warned. Try NSW, they at least know what is correct. Mount Buller ---- Don't bother.

Mt Buller is a 3 hour drive from Melbourne which is about its only positive attribute. In the negative, it is exceptionally expensive, poorly run, features terrible service, very short runs, long lift queues, and and is generally hard packed snow/ice, less than desirable conditions for anyone other than beginners. Comparing Mount Buller to overseas resorts is like comparing chalk and cheese.

Mount Buller is a nice resort but it is a pity about the queues: at the ski hire places on the way for chains, at the mountain entrance, to drive up the mountain, to park, to get on the bus because you have to park lower than the snow, to buy a lift pass, to get on the lifts, to buy your lunch, when you do all the reverse in the evening. Don't bother going on a Saturday/Sunday if you want the above. Go to Mount Buller on a weekday and it's a great fun little resort that we all enjoy and love. It just can't handle every second person from Melbourne there every weekend when decent skiing is on offer.
