I have been boarding for 12 years and have been fortunate for the last 3 to be engaged to a girl from Mayrhofen.
Mayrhofen is a fantastic ski area, especially if you have the ability to be able to get away from the busier areas, as the few learner slopes in the peak season are an absolute nightmare and should be avoided at all costs. For the intermediates and above the whole area is a bit of a playground and there is wide and various boarding/ skiing available.
Firstly, avoid penkenbahn unless you like the crowds. horbergbahn or finkenberg are a lot more relaxing and all end up in the same place pretty much as the areas are all linked.
Loads of great off piste stuff, but can be prone to the odd avalanche which has seen the demise of a few people recently, especially at the back of the 150 gondola.
And for you explorers, Mayrhofen is just the beginning and also the busiest. within 15 minutes car/ bus journey (buses are free by the way) you have Rammsberg, gerlos, Kaltenbach, fugen, hoch fugen. You can get one card to cover the lot. Horberg, gerlos and Kaltenbach all have superb Tal abfahrts (way down to the valley) but you need a certain level of ability and best to tap up a local if you want to stay safe. Kaltenbach and hoch fugen can be powder heaven on a good day but well worth being the first up on the lift it snows overnight.
Anyway could ramble on for hours. Top tip is go and try Zillertal valley (The whole area name) go up Penken but don't stay there all week/season. get on the free bus and go and try the other areas as well. oh and stay away from the local schnapps as it is rocket fuel.........
see you on the slopes
Very nice resort. Don't miss the happy hour on Penken upper lift stop on Sundays (not recomended for children...)
Plenty of apre-ski activities and excellent runs.
Did my 4th year in Mayrhofen in 2006 for 2 weeks in February. Having skied much of Europe I can recommend Mayrhofen. It has plenty of variation and linked lifts. Possible to do day trips like the larger French resorts.`It is more friendly than other top resorts and good value.`Boarders paradise and going back this year for New Year.`Watch out for the ski jumping and horse racing at this time.
We were there from Thur 23rd to Wed 29th March. We took a gamble to go to a lower altitude resort at this time of the year, but it really paid off. The snow was still good but softer in the afternoons and we had lovely clear skies most of the time. I had read so many complaints about the queues for the Penkenbahn but we had no problems at all and the times we were there ranged from 9-10am. We stayed in a wicked wee flat 90 euro a night for 5 people owned by the Familie Hafner. The 4 min shuttle bus to the slopes was just around the corner. Look out for great pizzas at the cafe by the Burton terrain park. We went up to the Hintertux glacier on the Sunday, go the whole way up to the top 3650m for the amazing views. There's a really good red run from there back down to the middle gondola, manageable even for beginner boarders.
Just got back today. Fantastic conditions, it snowed nearly every day. Powder everywhere, great off-piste and plenty of it. Stayed in a snowhouse which we found through Inghams. Very comfy. A room with private bathroom and a little lounge with your own tv. Penken lift a nightmare after 08:50 hrs. If this is busy jump on the bus to the next gondola not half as busy. Found food to be excellent especially the eidleweiss.
Only 1 bad point; there are no non-smoking restaraunts and believe me every man, woman, boy, girl, cat and dog chain smokes in Austria.
Just got back this morning. Baking hot sunshine every day. It's true what they say about Penken lift. Get on it by 8.30am no problem (2-5 min wait). Arrive after 9.00am, god help you. I could not believe they could cram you in so much. Stayed at hotel Brucke. If you get room 101 refuse it. You will not sleep all night(mate had it). I had twin with balcony. Could not fault it. Food top class. Reds up Penken are wide and fast, 3rd year boarding and loved them. Apre ski top notch what ever your age. If you find runs lumpy in afternoon shoot over to Ahorn. Smooth as a babys bum all day. Sadly only a couple of blues here and a couple of reds, one goes all the way to village. A must do run.
Went to Mayrhofen in Jan 06. Snow conditions were great and the ski-ing was good. Pistes are best in the morning and unbashed in the afternoon. Instructors were great and the atmosphere was good. Stayed just outside of Mayrhofen and walked in the evening. Great town, lots to do. Very little waiting at lifts, although the resort was quiet. Food and drink are excellent, with a good variety of places to stay.
Mayrhofen is great !!! , it has everything from apres ski to the best sking in the world. The sceney is picture post card, i stayed in the hotel pamstaller and there is a bus stop right outside the door. if you have a car i suggest going to the horberg gondala where the queues are much less busy. i would suggest going any day, so go !!!!!!!!!!

I went ot school and lived over the Summer back in 1967 in Maryhofen & left my heart there. I remember the wonderful small cafe I ate in often and all the souvenir shops I loved browsing thru. I still display a carved wooden plate with the Austrian symbol of an Eagle in broken chains I had purchased there. I can still see the wonderful view of the main street below, the church steeple & the distant snow covered mountains from my quaint upper floor bedroom I rented. I loved the 'Gruss Gott' hospitality & Frieda, the young house-maid, who would shake out my Down-filled comforter every morning out the window! I taught her to say 'The sky is Blue' with the 'th' sound - not found in the German language. I miss her today still. I still remember walking along the wooden rails & passing the old Cemetery. I hope the city has not changed much. I wish I could return. It was such a happy time in muy life. The cool evenings were filled with alpine music and strollers - and absolutely no vehicles at all! Every site a living postcard of breathtaking beauty. I miss you Mayerhofen. Bruce

I went to Mayrohofen with the family over the christmas period in 2003. The snow in the early part of the week was excellent, lots of powder and very good piste conditions. Towards the end of the week after some very cold weather the more popular pistes turned quite icy. The lifts were very efficient and most appeared to be quite new, good for me as I was boarding.
The resort is very good, plenty of really good reds, but only a few blue runs. The only real problem with the resort is for beginners. The main Penken area only has one blue run down from the top, which is a track for most of it's length. With a little ingenuity a relatively easy line can be found down one of the reds though. To get to the better quality blue runs, which are away from the Penken, you have to be able to get down at least one red run.
The mountain restaurants were pretty good, but it is better to avoid the Penken since it gets overcrowded. Better to get higher and further away. However there is one restaurant on the Penken which stays relatively quite because it is hidden away, and it has magnificent views. It can be found by following a track at the bottom of the nursery slope.
Mayrhofen village itself is very pleasant with some excellent restaurants, and cafe's. It also is supposed to have good nightlife. We found it very quite with the hotel room situated at the back of the hotel. We stayed at Manni's which I can thoroughly recommend.
Overall an excellent holiday.
