Filzmoos is a great little village. I have been once (last Feb half term) and the snow was fantastic. It snowed heavily all day every day which wasn't great, but it meant there wasn't a problem with dodgy snow conditions or anything. I am returning there in 10 days time (11th Feb). As far as nightlife goes the resort is fairly limited but for some fun, head to the Kalahari Bar or the Happy Filzmoos bar/restaurant. The resort is good for beginners and early intermediates. Advanced skiers would find it limiting, although there are some good black runs to be found in the neighbouring resorts like Ramsau and Schladming, which have the Dachstein mountain nearby. I highly recommend Filzmoos, it has great Austrian charm!
Traditional pituresque Austrian village with a very good snow record for the altitude. We have been visiting the Hotel Unterhof for over 10 years, and love the hospitality and atmosphere that this hotel provides. Lunch or Apres-ski at the Happy Filzmoos is great and perfectly situated to sit and watch the kids ride up and down the nursery slopes while the adults enjoy a welcome beer. The resort is at it's best for families or beginers/intermediates, and the resort can be skied in a day or so, but to a certain extent this misses the point. There is an excellent ski safari for guests at the Unterhof, where Marcus takes you on a very short transfer to one of the many local slopes. Within 15/20 minutes (a wait in the queue at other resorts)you can be enjoying Schladming, Flachau, Flachauwinkl and Wagrain where the skiing is almost unlimited and included in the comprehensive lift pass. A perfect compromise then with all the small village charm, and wonderful cruising runs in and around the village and immediate area. We have just booked again for January 2006. Check out Ryanair, flights to salzburg on 16th January were costing 1 penny! Book direct with the Unterhof on this week and you get a free lift pass thrown in...Unfortunately we can not make that week, but someone out there is going to get a seriously great bargain. IT COULD BE YOU
Filzmoos is a lovely little village. We went in Jan 2005 and had great snow. No lift queues and the slopes, though limited, are good for early intermediates which is what we are. Stayed in Hotel Unterhof. Top Class! Great food, friendly staff and superb leisure facilities (pool, sauna etc).Night life very quiet but some decent Apres in the Happy Filzmoos bar at the base of the slopes. We are going back to Filzmoos and same hotel in Jan 2006.
Have visited Filzmoos for the last three years and will return - that says it all! Excellent for intermediate skiers, few lift queues, very pretty and close transfer to Salzberg airport.
I visited in January and the snow was fantastic. The ski-bus is regular but the piste is very limited. Anything above intermediate level would soon run out of options. However, the resort is fantastically pretty and reasonably priced
