I've had the pleasure of skiing at Dizin for many years, and it never ceases to amaze me. The stunning mountain scenery, the excellent snow quality, and the overall atmosphere make it a truly unforgettable experience. Every run is filled with joy and excitement, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a top-tier skiing destination!
Update from last year. The running of the resort has been taken over by a company called Raika. This means better service and communications. The direct road from Tehran via Shemshak is now almost always plowed and open (Why they do not do the same with the upper parking is beyond me). Taxi this way is around $15. You end up at the upper parking, where there is a rental shop also. To get to the hotel, you have to ski down, or take the gondola. More lifts are open now than last year. There is more thinking now; after a snowfall last week, they only pisted the lower part and the competition slope, leaving the whole top free for off-piste. The nice restaurant on top of the Chaman lift is now open for lunch. The resort opens and closes at the correct times (normally 0830-1530). As it is easier to reach the resort now from Tehran, it has become busier. The skiing in Dizin is very good, with a lot of fairly safe off-piste, and normally lots of snow and a long season. The hotels have a good standard. Off course, still no after-ski.
Hi,
I have been skiing in Dizin for many years now. The place itself is absolutely great. Fresh powder, great intermediate slopes and some much more advanced yet relatively safe off-piste. All in all, sounds wonderful especially considering the costs to foreigners.
The biggest downside is the staff. This will not be noticed by the foreigners because Iranians love to be nice to foreigners as much as they like to be rude to their compatriots. The staff are the local villagers who are not in any way trained or instructed in basic courtesies; just a bunch of peasants who think they are somehow very special people because rich Tehranis come to their village, buy their properties and build some Swiss-look-alike imitation chalets, and use their resort to ski.
Honestly, you will notice this attitude less in Shemshak and even less in Darbandsar.
Another issue is the total lack of ability to distinguish between service and sales, in Iran, by the businessman. Running a ski resort definitely falls into service category, and not in sales, yet you would feel the opposite here. You pay the full amount to enter the resort and enjoy all the amenities, but they close down half the rides in the middle of the week to lower their costs, so you will stand in lines that are as long as the lines over the weekend while all the rides are open and people swarm from Tehran to be seen in their new ski equipment! So regardless of how much you try to manoeuvre around this problem, they will systematically make sure you get stuck in the lines. Again, you shouldn't expect more from a bunch of up and coming peasants who disguise themselves as businessmen.
Long live Iran,
A caring Persian
Very good skiing, plenty of snow, normally the resort is open between November and April. All snow is natural. Pistes are mostly intermediate, but there are a few expert pistes available. A lot of safe off-piste if you feel like it. There are around 15 lifts, and 20 pistes, but do not expect everything to be open. This depends on how busy the resort is, and on the weather. We stayed for 5 days, the last day only the main gondola lift to the middle station was open. There is plenty of skiing from there, so it was no problem. It had snowed a lot the night before and, best guess, maximum 50 people were skiing that day. The lifts are 40 years old but they work. Lifts start at 0830 and close around 1530 (time in Iran is flexible). Different maps give different altitudes; according to GPS the highest lift reaches 3600m and the entrance is at 2650m. On Thursdays and Fridays and around the Persian New Year expect some lines, especially at the bottom. Weekdays the resort is not very busy.
Both hotels in Dizin have the same standard prices and food. Both hotels are really nice, 60's architecture, clean and up to a good standard. The staff are very friendly and helpful, just try a few words of farsi (that goes for the whole resort, by the way). Food was good simple Iranian kitchen; perfectly adequate. Hotel 2 has good coffee in the Coffee Shop, while Amirs chocolate in hotel 1 makes very good hot chocolate
After-ski is non-existent, unless you are invited to a private party. You come to Dizin for the skiing/snowboarding.
You can reach Dizin from Tehran by the direct road in about one hour but this road is often closed in winter and the longer Chalous road takes about 2-3 hours, depending on traffic. Taxi is not expensive; around 45$ each way.
Prices were about or less than half of what you would pay in Europe. Rent equipment from the shop at the parking lot, cheaper than at the hotel, and the equipment is of good enough quality. Ski equipment rental was 60$/person for 5 days, the hotel 60$/night for a double room, ski pass 23/day. Food around 30$/day altogether. It may be advisable to use a ski instructor/guide at least for the first days. This costs around 60$/day.
Dizin is one of the largest and most beautiful Iranian ski resorts in the Alborz mountain range, in northern Iran, which attracts many foreign and home tourists over the winter, with professionals and amateurs visiting the ski slopes.
Dizin is one of the best slopes for snowboarding or skiing. Although the facilities are old it's still one of the awesome resorts. I recommend all of you to visit Dizin and just ride powder!
Excellent: nature, variety of pistes (over 20), long season (5 months), long pistes (the longest one almost 7 km), reasonable price ($12/day).
Good: hotels, restaurants, trap-cabin
Poor: fun, staff, service
Sum.: excellent place just for sport! (not for fun).
