Bakuriani is a good resort for families and beginners, with easy access and generally gentle gradients. The higher slopes, however, are very exposed to wind.
We visited for three days. Weather conditions matched the forecast — temperatures around freezing, wet snow or rain at lower levels, and strengthening winds higher up. Despite these conditions being relatively mild compared with many alpine resorts, the upper lifts remained closed throughout our stay and never re-opened. On the third day, the entire resort was closed, with no clear explanation beyond the snow being wet.
The main town of Bakuriani is very rustic and offers an interesting glimpse into the mix of post-Soviet infrastructure and Georgian culture. Access to the higher southern runs is awkward if you are staying in the eastern part of town, requiring a long walk (30+ minutes) or a taxi.
We stayed at Hotel KoxtaStar, which is less than a minute from the lifts and ticket office. However, the access road is extremely muddy and badly potholed — best not to pack your finest après-ski clothing.
