I have just returned from Abtenau and thought the skiing was fantastic with loads and loads of snow. Both my sons (Ryan and Aaran) are now fantastic skiers. Just a word of warning if you cannot ski though, the nursery slope is closed for some reason. Apart from that Abtenau is wonderful, a beautiful village and has friendly locals; well worth a visit.

I have been visiting Abtenau for the past 29 years. We have visited in spring, summer, autumn and last but not least the winter (all seasons are beautiful). I don't ski, but my husband and children all ski. My husband and children all learned to ski in Abtenau and indeed my son also takes his wife (Sandra) and his children for skiing in Abtenau. My son and his family do go to other countries to ski, but still love to go back to Abtenau every year. We get a very good hotel. It is quiet, the air is clean, lift pass prices are good, food and drink is good and reasonably priced and last but not least, the scenery is wonderful and breathtaking; you absorb all this and then say 'I will be back next year'.
The skiing is excellent for families, the pistes are always kept in an excellent condition as are the langlauf trails and for the people who would like something more challenging, it is only a very short trip on the local bus to a very vast ski region. Give Abtenau a go and you won't regret it.
We have been in Abtenau for a one week holiday for almost ten years, following some previous two visits years back. It's a place worth visiting and staying if you look for the quality vacation; no noise, minimum pollution, decent services and prices, far from the hubbub of fashionable resorts. People are forthcoming, the trails are well kept and accessible for every age, weight or physical condition, the sights are breathtaking within minutes of hiking and if you get bored in the evening, drive to Salzburg and spice your vacation with whatever you like.

Abtenau is a place where you just go back for more. The skiing is not particuaraly challenging but the convienience of the hotel and the friendliness of the villagers make up for this. It is great for large groups (wherever you are on the mountain or in a restaurant you will see somebodt you know) and people with young children.
