Snowfall warning for North Island New Zealand Issued 24 July at 10am local time. A deepening sub-tropical depression will quickly cross North Island on Saturday accompanied by a short period of gales and heavy rain. Expect easterly blizzard conditions to develop on Ruapehu as well as the ranges from the Tararuas to the Kawekas and perhaps even further north. A Cool SE flow with further bands of snow for mountains elsewhere. Many resorts have seen more than 20cm snow over the past 24hrs.

Spain may not be the first destination that springs to mind when you think of winter sports. Baqueria Beret is the biggest mountain resort in Spain and has over 70 km of pistes waiting to be explored. Located in the Pyrenees close to the French boarder this resort boasts a good snow record and is within striking distance of city airports that offer low-cost travel options. There is seldom a problem with lift queues and while most of the slopes will appeal to beginner-intermediates, there is plenty of off piste possibilities. Unfortunately there is no park or pipe worth talking about as yet. Off the slopes, the village is a bit drab with concrete apartment blocks polluting the skyline. Accommodation is generally cheaper than France and there are some good restaraunts in the village too. The nightlife is lively, verging on rowdy in places!

I spent last season (03-04) in Baqueira. We had an appauling season, with aweful snow for most of the season. Baqueira is renowned for late season snow, and it was only in March that we actually got dumped on regularly.

Its an expensive resort for spain, and the apres ski is mostly lame (unless you wear polo shirts and are extremely snotty). There are some great runs, and the resort is huge, which means that crowds are seldom a big problem if you venture away from the main lifts.

I would reccommend staying in Salardu or Arties if you have a car, else Vielha.

The main problem was snow. The resort just isnt snow-sure enough. With lots of snow too, the resort is mostly flat(ish), so it can be a problem. I went to Chamonix for a week after the season, and that is a steep mountain. Felt like i was a beginner even though I was boarding all season.

The best thing about Baqueira is that there were 10 english speakers there the whole season (maybe 20) ... so you can avoid annoying larger louts that you get in Andorra and in the Alpes.

Would reccommend it highly, althoguh check conditions before going.
