Andermatt is a real cool village. It is very authentic, with old and beautifull buildings. There are plenty of shops, good skiing and snowboard rentals and restaurants. The hotels come from cheap to expensive. The ski area is fabulous. If you have touring skis, you can have a lot of fun out there. As we where there, the first two days it was snowing hard. We didn't have to go far for "fresh pow" . If you go there, don't forget to go through the "Felsental" (rockvalley) but only if there is a lot of snow. Real cool. You'll get to another village, where you can have lunch. A taxi bus will bring you back. Piste skiing is also very nice, with long runs to the village. There is also a controlled unprepared (off-piste) area within the piste area. The top gondola is quite small, and you'll have to wait about half an hour sometimes. Make sure you also go to the two smaller areas (Andermatt is built up in three areas.) They sometimes provide better sunny conditions and they also offer very nice off-piste skiing.

Visitor Reviews of Andermatt

Tuca from SPAIN writes:

If you're used to the typical French mega-resort, with 300 km of easy runs and some ugly concrete "villages", this is quite a change. The village is nice and quiet (there is a military complex, but it's not that big and outside the village). But it's the skiing that is especially different. Advanced and expert skiers will love this place. There are really just a few lifts, but they give access to some of the steepest, longest and most uncrowded runs in the Alps, the best snow (this is the area with the most snow of the whole Swiss Alps and it's mostly north-facing) and some of the nicest and longest off-piste. One interesting thing is that you can get on any train to move from one part to another of the resort (but there is also a free bus).
