Andermatt is a really cool village. It is very authentic, with old and beautiful buildings. There are plenty of shops in Andermatt alongside the good skiing and snowboard rentals and restaurants. The hotels range from cheap to expensive. Andermatt ski area is fabulous. If you have touring skis, you can have a lot of fun out there. As we where there, the first two days it was snowing hard. We didn't have to go far for "fresh pow". If you go there, don't forget to go through the "Felsental" (rock valley) but only if there is a lot of snow. It's really cool. You'll get to another village, where you can have lunch. A taxi bus will bring you back. The piste skiing at Andermatt is also very nice, with long runs to the village. There is also a controlled unprepared (off-piste) area within the piste area. The top gondola is quite small, and you'll have to wait about half an hour sometimes. Make sure you also go to the two smaller areas (Andermatt is built up in three areas.) They sometimes provide better sunny conditions and they also offer very nice off-piste skiing.

Visitor Reviews of Andermatt
Christian from Sweden writes:
Andermatt is not the typical resort for skiers. In the village 'the clocks stopped' in the 60´s when the tunnel through Gotthardt to Italy was built and Andermatt was no longer along the traffic flow over the pass. So that's the curse and charm of this place. Everything is old and slow.
The mountains are also special. Almost all are north facing, steep, cold, no sun and get a lot of snow. They don't prepare much runs, so it's powder and stays like that for a while.
Now some improvement will come, because there is an Egyptian investor building the " New Andermatt" with lush hotels and a luxury new apartment town. Time will show how it works. Accommodation right now is hard to find, as above mentioned it's old with charm, but expensive. We stayed in Basecamp Andermatt which is a cool alternative from hotels. It is an alpine hut above the village. This year has been cold and dry, needs some serious dump to be good to ski. It is now the end of January and it looks like the end of April. Maybe you guys are luckier than we were.
Be safe, Chris
