North America Weekly Snow Roundup #315
Canada's season ended this week and centres have been closing in the US too, but there are still four resorts operating spread Across the East Coast, Midwest and West Coast.
NORTH AMERICA INTRO|Canada’s 2026 ski season ended over the weekend with the final areas that had still been operating, Whistler, Banff's Sunshine Village and Sommet St Sauveur on the East Coast in Quebec all staging their final hurrahs. Sunshine reported about 29cm (11.5") of fresh snowfall for its closing weekend, taking it through the 10m (33 feet) season-to-date total. It's announced it will reopen for a fortnight of summer skiing over late June and early July, thanks to all the snowfall.
Centres have been closing in the US too, on the East Coast and the final area that had been open in the Rockies, Arapahoe Basin, also ended its season after several extensions on Sunday. But there are still four resorts operating spread Across the East Coast, Midwest and West Coast.
WESTERN US REPORT| We are down to four ski areas still open in the US West, now all on the Pacific Coast, with the last resort open in the Rockies closing at the weekend. There has been some wintry weather with snow showers and strong winds, which have led to temporary resort closures, including Oregon's Timberline (40/80" / 100/200cm), which closed over the weekend. It reported eight inches (20 cm) of fresh snowfall then and another 2” (5cm) in the past 24 hours. Mammoth Mountain (36/128” / 90/320cm) will be the last area open in California next week, as Palisades Tahoe said they ended their season on Sunday. It will reopen on Saturday after closing midweek with lifts running from 8 a.m to 2 p.m to, and skiers will be able to access the Funitel and the Gold Coast Express for their final turns of 25-26. Mammoth is currently offering discounted tickets to bike, ride, and golf all in one day. It has now extended its season at least to the end of the month. “We are so stoked to announce we are extending the season for you to soak up more spring laps,” a social media post stated. “With coverage holding up great on the upper mountain, we are going to keep the lifts spinning daily for skiing & riding through May 31.” From Saturday, May 26, the Broadway Express, Face Lift Express, and Chair 23 will spin daily from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Main Lodge will be open for food and beverage, rentals, repairs, and lessons.
Although ski areas have been closing, America's famous Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area on the Montana/Wyoming border has put lift tickets on sale and says it hopes to open this weekend and stay open for as long as it can. Thickets are now available to purchase for May 27-June 10, but the opening date is still TBD and could be as early as the 25th.
WESTERN US FORECAST|A warm, mostly stable pattern continues across the Western US. Mammoth’s 9,000–11,000 ft terrain sees mid‑30s to low‑40s °F by day with strong sun, and only a light overnight refreeze. Timberline (6,000–8,500 ft) trends similarly, 34–42 °F, with rapid softening by late morning. Beartooth Basin (10,000–11,000 ft) stays slightly cooler, 28–36 °F, but still largely dry. All three areas remain in full spring‑snow mode with no significant new snowfall expected.
EASTERN US REPORT| Vermont’s Killington (0/60cm / 0/24”) is, as usual, the last area open in the East. Its Superstar run has survived temperatures getting into the 70s and even towards the low 80s this week. There's about a mile of terrain still open, with bumps and soft snow the main attraction. The other two of the three ski areas that had still been open on the US East Coast closed last weekend, with Vermont’s Jay Peak calling it a day on their long 25-26 run, as did Black Mountain in New Hampshire which noted that it saw more operating days this season than the 22/23 and 23/24 seasons combined, and that this year’s closing date comes a full two weeks later than the previous year’s, he noted. The ski area had hoped to stay open through Memorial Day and was making snow into April, but warm temperatures seemed to prevent that.
The upcoming Memorial Day weekend is still the target of Michigan’s Boyne Mountain Resort, the only centre still open in the Midwest. If it makes it, and it’s looking good, it will make history for the resort, if skiing continues past May 23. Boyne Mountain Resort is currently reopening for skiing on weekends from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on its Victor run, where the snow was piled up deep through the winter.
EASTERN US FORECAST|A warm late‑May pattern settles over Vermont, pushing freezing levels well above Killington’s summit. Upper‑slope temperatures around 38–48 °F by day and mid‑30s °F overnight allow only a shallow refreeze, with surfaces turning soft and slushy by late morning. Sunshine dominates, though a brief shower is possible over the weekend. No new snowfall is expected, and the Superstar Glacier continues in full spring‑skiing mode with rapid afternoon melt.
