Autumn Snowfall Brings Early Promise for Alps Ski Season
Weekly Snow News for Europe. updated 3 September 2025: Early September snowfall above 2,500 m lifts Alpine glaciers, with Saas Fee and Zermatt leading limited but promising terrain.

Alps
Occasional snow flurries have been reported at altitude, with freezing levels between 2,500 m and 3,500 m. Saas Fee and Zermatt continue to provide around 14 km of high-altitude pistes. Italy’s Passo Stelvio is also open, while Austria’s Hintertux glacier is expected to reopen later this month.

Forecast
A modest early September dusting is expected above 2200 m, with up to 20 cm (8") forecast in parts of France and Switzerland. Eastern Alps remain drier.
Scandinavia
No centres are currently open. Norway’s Galdhøpiggen is temporarily closed but may reopen in about two weeks. Finland’s Ruka and Levi will begin operations in early October thanks to snowfarming.
Forecast
No fresh snow expected this week. Mild conditions persist across Norway, Sweden, and Finland, with highs up to 22 °C.
