90-Year-Old New Hampshire Ski Area Appears Closed For Good

*** UPDATE 19 OCTOBER 2023 – IT APPEARS THAT BLACK MOUNTAIN WILL OPEN FOR THE 23-24 SEASON AFTER ALL ***

One of North America’s oldest ski centres won’t open this winter, and appears to be permanently closed.

The Fichera Family issued a statement saying that New Hampshire’s Black Mountain ski area, which they operate, won’t open for the 2023-2024 season, and from the words used, it appears won’t open for snow sports again.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, including soaring energy costs, unpredictable weather, extreme staffing shortages throughout the region, and many other challenges, we have made the very difficult decision to cease operations …We apologize for any inconvenience,” the statement says, noting that those who had pre-purchased season passes will be refunded, and adding,

“To all of our past and present team members, all season pass holders and guests, extended family and friends – thank you for your support over the years, we will miss you. Thank you for being the true spirit of skiing and keeping the dream alive.”

Black Mountain is located in Jackson, New Hampshire and has terrain for all abilities served by two chairlifts and three surface lifts. The Civilian Conservation Corps cut the first ski trail on the mountain in 1934, making Black Mountain one of the oldest ski areas in New Hampshire.
