I have skied all over Europe and north America and you cannot beat the French Alps. That is why it receives more tourists than anywhere in the world. That's why I teach hundreds of Yanks to ski every season who hate skiing in America, and there are some who should not come back with your racist attitude, the lift workers here are some of the best trained in the Alps and it is some guests who need education in manners, (if I went to the UK and just spoke French what kind of reception do you think I would get)
As for the skiing, Megeve, as with Courchevel, is one of the more expensive resorts in France and is on an average altitude for a ski resort but it is one of the biggest around and is excellent for all types of skiers, good restaurants and bars make it a favourite destination for many who return year after year, please come and experience it for yourselves and do try to learn the lingo as you will be respected for doing so, and if you're a typical British/Irish tourist go to Chamonix or Tignes or stay at home.

I've been going to Megeve for some years now, the skiing is fantastic when the snow is good. The resort is expensive and the locals can come across as a bit arrogant. However, if you try the local lingo then they do warm to you!
Luckily I've been away with skiroyale each time and they really look after you well... great atmosphere in their Hotel Les Cimes.
I would say, enjoy the skiing, don't plan on too many nights out in town unless you have deep pockets and you will fall in love with the "christmas feel" of the resort.
Have lived as a Brit in France for 5 years and skied pretty much all of the main resorts. I think as an overall package Megeve delivers across the board 110%. I especially like the people who work the lift systems in all weathers and are courteous and obliging at all times. No you do not need to speak French but as in any foreign country it helps. I am, like the French, fed up with Brits who expect everyone in France to speak English. Quite frankly I would support the refusal into any nightclub a Brit who is so out of touch with French culture and yes it can be expensive but the benefit of this is that it keeps the 'riff raff' away.
I would agree with the other reviews - Megeve is a very French resort and you should speak French if you go here or you will not get very far. It is low and conditions can be tricky if the snow is not good. The lifts are quite slow as well. This is not the resort to go to if you like the ski-in ski-out type of holiday. There are loads of visitors there just to enjoy the town and also the mountain restaurants which can be reached without skiing. It is very expensive as well. On the plus side it is quite easy to get to and the skiing is mostly of the easy variety with great views. Apres-ski is quite quiet and I've heard that some Brits have issues getting into the nightclubs of which there are a couple. To summarise - if you are looking for a hassle free holiday with good value food, guaranteed snow and natives who will all be super friendly when you speak to them in a foreign language then do not go to Megeve. If on the other hand you are happy to splurge a bit on expenses, can at least attempt to order in French and like picturesque skiing then give it a try.

Found Megeve about 4 years ago and love it! The slopes are great for all levels. My favourite is Mont d'Arbois. From the top you can ski some lovely slopes with stunning scenery.
Megeve is expensive and with the euro being so unkind it can be eye watering just ordering a drink. Even so, it is worth having lunch out on the mountains especially some of the more remote ones which serve amazing traditional French food. Most of the people in Megeve are friendly and I find it always helps to speak a little French. 'Bonjour' and a smile goes a long way towards friendly service!
P.s. I agree with other reviewers, lets keep Megeve a secret.
Megeve is a beautiful place. The mountains are great, there are plenty of various slopes for all levels, the food is very good, I'd even say fantastic.
It's a great place for kids - they have special kids' slopes with professional instructors.
A few good places for shopping, very nice mountain paths for walking, breathtaking scenery.
The only flaw is that without speaking French it is quite tough. Even at the 5 star hotels the staff barely speak any English (and certanly doesn't speak Russian or any other language) and they kind of look down on everybody who isn't French.
But if you can tolarate being a little looked down upon, Megeve is great place for skiing/snowboarding and relaxing in a quiet mountain town.
I love Megeve. Been going there for over 10 years. Skiing is varied and wonderful for all levels, but as I speak French and have friends in the village I feel very much at home there. I don't find the French stuck up at all, but I have heard them say they are not keen on drunken Brits, so unfortunately, that is a bad reputation some have made for the English. Megeve is not a place for wild nightlife.
If you come to Megeve and love it, don't tell everyone how wonderful it is.
Yes, it has empty, well groomed slopes, it is a vast ski area (that nowhere in North America can compete with) and yes it has some of the best mountain restaurants anywhere, but if you tell everyone, then all the Brits that think Val/3Valleys/Verbier is the bees knees will come here and ruin it.
I have skied most of the big resorts (many times) yet still keep coming back to Megeve every season.
It has something for everyone from nervous novices to instructor level, although it is mainly suitable for intermediates.
If you have kids Megeve is fantastic as the empty pistes mean you don't have to constantly worry about some out of control idiot taking them out.
Last year we did 3 resorts in the US - Keystone, Steamboat & Winterpark. It was the first year we hadn't been to Megeve since we started skiing in 2002. The US was OK but very unchallenging (unless you want to ski moguls) and everywhere shuts at 9-10pm. As I said, we started in Megeve with a company that includes 2 hours tuition every day (I can remember being petrified coming down Mandarine) and have gone from walking sideways up a slope to skiing some reasonable blacks. There is so much choice in Megeve, we still haven't managed to cover it all yet. We're going back again in a weeks time and the snow reports look fantastic. Given a choice of Megeve or the US, it's Megeve every time.
