Finally made it to Fernie this year and was very pleased with the hill. Excellent terrain and bigger than I was expecting. We lucked the conditions big time and had a nice fresh dump on a bluebird, so we were able to experience the terrain of the 5 bowls with big smiles. If you are just cruising groomers I can see why you would think the resort may be small, as a lot of the terrain is tied up in the bowls.
The town is small and quaint, with gorgeous scenery surrounding it. I recommend going here, most definitely. I've hit most of the BC resorts and I rate it as one of the best. I hear the conditions can be hit or miss (as a lot of resorts, really), but they were fantastic while we were here and we were very satisfied.
Fernie goes both ways.
The terrain is very fun. Its not super advanced or anything and the hill's about medium sized. Its not huge, its not small.
Fernie gets legendary dumped every once in a whie. They also get legenday crappy days, a little more often too if you ask me. But if you're there on a good Fernie powder day, you potentially will experience the best snow you will ever ski.
The prices at Fernie are only worth it if there are good conditions because it's expensive, but if it's good it's worth it.
Last year I lived and worked in Fernie for the entire season; it was my first time skiing there. I was dissapointed with the snow to say the least. The high speed quads pack people on the hill so fast that the snow is all gone in the inbounds terrain by ten, and the slackcountry you can access in Fernie is so small the pow is usually gone there by noon as well. I only had one powder day there, and that was because the roads were closed so none of the Calgary crowd could get in. As far as avalanche closure go, the rain/freeze/dump cycle, combined with the headwall above the resort creates perfect avalanche conditions, and the closures are frustrating, but perfectly justifiable. I'm not saying it doesn't dump there, but I am saying you are unlikely to see any of it unless you are waiting in line for the chair at 7 AM. If you like parties, nice hotels, and gourmet food, Fernie is the place to be. If you're like me, sleeping in the trunk of your car and eating ramen noodles all winter in order to earn face shots; you will be dissapointed.
To start with, the terrain at Fernie is sweet, side country pretty good, snow (when it's on) is actually legendary and the town is lively. The main problem here is with RCR and the ridiculous prices that they charge. They know their target market i.e. Calgarian weekend warriors who have cash to burn. They're monopolising the Calgary market and it's hurting local people. $95 for a day pass is crazy for the aged lift system that they have here. But if you're loaded and want to ski in a great place go here and help bolster RCR's money grabbing pockets.
Every time I've been to Fernie the snow sucks! If you look to see what the snow conditions are on their website they always add an extra 30cm of lies. if you're looking for untracked pow you will not find it here thanks to there high speed qaud that packs hundreds of people on each run. Well that's enough hating for this hater, I'm out.
Okay, there seems to be a few conflicting reviews here, and I would like to attempt to sort them out for people who have not been to Fernie. I have been skiing almost everywhere, and if you are accustomed to skiing the rest of BC, e.g. Whitewater, Red, Revelstoke etc, Fernie will seem to be a bit of a disappointment. However, if you are used to skiing in eastern North America and even Europe and Banff to some extent, the hill will seem to be fricking righteous. However, I will point out, as a local, the rain and avalanche closures, as well as not having a good park to hit in between storm cycles do tend to be a bit of a downside. Still, the snow is amazing when it is here.
I was weary of going skiing Nov 26th (preview weekend) as the snow was sparse at the bottom of the hill. Am I ever glad I ventured out, the snow from mid mountain up was great. Fresh tracks to be made on Blueberry, Dancer, Boomerang and Bear. Promises to be another great season if this keeps up!
Fernie used to have a half pipe and cheaper tickets. They took away the jumps. They jack prices every year. RCR owns the mountain, they need to listen to the people and community, stay open a month longer every year. Instead of closing with a solid base of snow, keep it running for good spring skiing. Bring back the half pipe, jumps and terrain park!
Fernie gets great snow, needs to get rid of the corporation. Private ownership! $1200 for an early bird deal seasons pass is too much.
