I really enjoy skiing at this resort. The skiing is varied with plenty of intermediate groomers, tree skiing and steep bowl skiing (Summit Bowl). The family enjoy it with a great kids ski school and ski-in, ski-out village. The new night show is great for the family and is free.
The village is certainly Australia's most picturesque ski resort - highly recommended!
Australia's snow may not be on par with say Japan or Utah! but it is much more accessable than many of the European resorts. Mid season is probably the time to go and when you'll get the best cover of snow possible! I have skied falls all of my life and even if I do leave Australia I will keep coming back 'cause if you know where to look there is always terrain to challenge you!!
To Josh from Australia.
2006 was the worst season ever, so it's probably not the best idea to judge falls purely based on that. Sure, Australia doesn't measure up against North America but if you'd been there in 2000 you'd probably be singing a different song.
I've skied at Falls Creek all my life, and absolutely love it. I've skied at many resorts in Canada and in the Alps, but the convenience of being able to do it just for a weekend makes it worth it. Sure, the snow can be dodgy, and it's expensive, and the terrain not huge, but it is still a great place to be.
I don't consider skiing in Australia to be the same sport as skiing overseas. So Josh, I would agree that there's no point going if you live in Perth. Europe's not that much further away.
I visited Falls Creek in late July 2006 and I must say, I was EXTREMELY disappointed. After riding in Canada for 4 previous seasons, the terrain at Falls was not challenging and limited to say the least. Less than half the runs were open (due to a 25cm snow base-most of it man made) and we still paid FULL PRICE for our lift tickets ($96). The conditions were horrible, it rained every day we were there, and most of the cover was slush or ice. It was, in my opinion, a wasted trip. (I live in Perth)
My advice to any avid skier/boarder is to stay away from ANY Australian ski resort. They are simply not worth it. Go to North America where the real snow is.
Falls Creek has a fantastic range of slopes for very beginners to expert. Weather is quite unpredictable, with some seasons never seeing 1 metre of cover at any one time, and others reaching 2.5 metres. Beginners best to stick to the Lake Side of the mountains and advanced over in the Maze and Wishing Well, which are fantastic fun. There need to be plenty of snow for these areas to be good. If the snow is not so good, Ruined Castle and Summit provide a challenge and have a good amount of snowmaking capability. Lodge and nightlife are outstanding, with the Falls Creek Country Club being a standout for food and accomodation!
