Alpine skiing: a place to learn. A great kids race program.
Nordic (cross country skiing) They groom a nice loop behind the restaurant that has good trail to stride and skate ski. They also groom more trail heading toward the downhill area and up a long forest service road, for those wanting a more extensive workout. You have to take skis off and walk across the road at one point (unless the road is snow covered). The easy loop behind the lodge is suitable for beginning tour skiers. The spur to the left off that loop is for more advanced to intermediate skiers.
Food: great happy hour from late afternoon 'til 6 pm with nice menu and $4 brews: worth a stop on the way down from Mt Hood Meadows ski area. More extensive menu in adjoining restaurant.
Have you been to Cooper Spur Mountain Resort lately? WOW ... what a nice little Pacific Northwest Resort!! There is a new management team with a very friendly staff. The Cabins, Condos and Lodge Rooms are clean and welcoming! The Restaurant is quaint with a roaring fire and good food!! The outdoor hot tubs are a plus for star-gazing :) The Ski and Tubing Area has had great snow this year and the Ski Lodge is a wonderful gathering place for friends and family. Lodging is available year-round for hikers and bikers as well. If you are looking for a wonderful pacific northwest experience or just looking to get out of Portland ... give them a try. 541-352-6692
The cabins at Cooper Spur are comfortable for a family vacation. The slope at Cooper Spur is good for learning and tune-ups at a family friendly price. Guests at the cabins get a discount on Meadows tickets. If you're looking for a place to relax, check out the Spur. If you need a dose of insanity, head to the Meadows or Timberline, but then you'll be ready for the quiet retreat afforded by a very nice small resort. It's a family run operation, so don't expect Motel 6.
09-10 was a snow-failure year, but 05-06, 06-07, 07-08 and 08-09 all had good snow by Christmas. 09-10 started with a bang, but last week there was a significant melt. 24 inches and temps in the low 20s for the upcoming week portend another nice Christmas.
Hey folks, Cooper Spur is what it is. It is a great place to learn to ski. Other than that, it is not all that special. Cooper Spur is not a resort. There are a few cabins, but you have to shuttle to the slopes. And at the slope, there is only a snack bar and a restroom, so don't set your sights high. But it certainly fitted into a budget last season. We were able to do the family pass for the year and got in about 10 days and really got our money's worth. But where else can you go and get a lift ticket and rentals for $30? It is the baby brother to Mount Hood Meadows. Go to Cooper Spur to learn for the first time. Or even to work on your technique on the cheap. Their lessons don't end until you learn to do it. How great is that. We are not beginners, but our family found it to be a great tune up before our annual trip to Colorado. Dust off the cobwebs, as it were. My wife who normally is pretty scared, got some good experience and was able to negotiate much more terrain in Colorado. In essence, the small investment at Cooper Spur made her time in Colorado much more fulfilling.
Use Cooper Spur for what it is intended for, a place to learn without the big price tag. The 07-08 season had lots of snow which helped quite a bit. This 08-09 season has not had any yet so that might put the dampers on Cooper Spur.
Stay in Hood River, OR. Very nice little town with nice restaurants and shopping. Hood River Inn is a big hotel on the river with a nice restaurant. Hood River Hotel is a quaint antique-style hotel that is right downtown. Comfort Suites is a nice budget option. Lots of smaller hotels in town. Can also ski at Mt Hood Meadows, both are 45min or so from town.
Skiers be warned !!!
The Cooper Spur Resort in Cooper Spur Oregon is quite possibly the worst ski resort I've been to in 15 years of skiing. Although the snow quality there is nice, the staff were horrible. We had a complaint about a smell coming from our room and the staff wouldn't even come to our room to look into the matter. When we asked if we could have a different room, the manager told us that they were full (even though the cleaning lady (the following morning) told us they had several empty rooms. When we asked for a customer satisfaction review form, the manager told us they didn't have any and that we could just address any concerns to her. Since she was one of the problems, we left feeling that we had no recourse (other than this).
Again, the snow quality was pretty good, but the dated, over-priced rooms, and the extremely rude staff made my stay at Cooper Spur Resort the worst ski trip of my life.
