Cannon Mountain and it's Cannon Peeps is one of the best mountains that I have ever visited. The terrain, views, people, employees are beyond compare. The snow-making and groomers have made wonders of what we have got for natural snow and man-made. If you have not skied Cannon in the past couple of years, you will be amazed how far it has come.
No doubt it is cold some days, windy somedays but well worth the conditions and people. Highly recommend also for the cost.
Let it snow!
Biggest and most challenging mountain in NH. It has a reputation of being icy and cold, because it's often icy and cold. It has a north face so that's what you get. With that you also get incomparable views, incredible terrain, low attendance, tons of snow, and the most challenging terrain in NH.
This place is like no other because it's owned by the state, not a pvt. company. Employees are park rangers so don't expect resort treatment, you will not be coddled. It's run like a state operation so there is no urgency or sense that anyone is trying to earn your business. This is a no frills, no fluff, no BS place. People here still wear wool and the attitude is typical New England taciturn.
Nestled in Franconia Notch, there's no more majestic setting. The Notch has it's own WX system and it can be snowing in there and sunny and 40 degrees just 5 miles south. It gets more snow than anywhere nearby. The often windy conditions make for frequent "free refills". When hitting fresh powder, you can find your tracks filled in on the next run. With all this heartiness it is still the best learning area that no one seems to know about.
The Tuckerbrook section is designated for learners and is accessible yet isolated. It has it's own lift and 6 trails that no advanced skiers go near so the learner has no concerns with traffic. It's also the best value in NH with 2 for 1 liftix on Tues and Thurs.
In short, the biggest, baddest, boldest, most unforgiving and most glorious mountain in NH.

Funny to see all of these old reviews. Cannon has nearly doubled its snow-making and grooming within the last decade, and added 70% more terrain and doubled its base lodge capacities and capabilities. Those steep, cold, and icy myths are a thing of the past, and with smaller crowds on a bigger mountain, it's easily the best ski area in NH.
This past winter vacation week, it was a pleasure to see Cannon in such decent condition, given the lack of snow up North. Snow covered Franconia Notch was definitely the exception to the rest of Rte 93. Hats off to the Cannon Grooming crew, as we enjoyed great corduroy throughout. No insane lifelines as found in central Vt. Everywhere from Tramway to Taft Slalom was in good shape, and Gary's and Rocket were glory runs in the afternoon. Looking forward to getting back there after these early March storms...think whiteout conditions
Cannon Mountain is old school. There's always plenty of ungroomed terrain left after a dump. Do yourself a favor and check the weather before you ski there and pay attention to the wind. Cannon Mountain has over 2000 ft of vertical but the front four at about 700ft vertical can be the best terrain on the mountain. Also check out Kinsmans glade and Tramline for a challenge.
The ice at Cannon is no worse than at any other New England ski area, and due to the high elevation plus lower skier traffic it can be much less icy. Ice is caused by several contributing factors, and skier traffic is one. Other mountains in the area may have better grooming, but they need it due to their crushing crowds and lift lines. True, intermediate level skiers will have a wide variety of terrain to choose from. I do not work there, nor do I work for the marketing departments of mountains that compete with Cannon. I would like to see the mountain recognized for it's excellence, so it will stay in business and flourish.
Cannon is icy, cold, windy and steep. It's not for occasional novice to intermediate skiers. When it snows though, it has some of the best skiing in the east.
Cannon Mountain is a cult ski area with steep runs up to 35º and very extensive woods skiing. Conditions can be variable from hard pack to powder. The aerial tramway makes possible full mountain runs plus one half while riding the same tram car every 8 minutes. When there is 1-2m of snow, this is one of the best areas in the Eastern US for the advanced skier or boarder. Prices are moderate to inexpensive.
