I cannot praise the resort of Auris En Oisans highly enough. We have been every winter for the last 4 years and have never tired of the variety of slopes ranging all the way up to black. It is great for families with young children. There are restaurants, cafes, shops and several ski hire establishments, but obviously there are less there than big resorts such as Alpe d'Huez. Eating out and accommodation is much cheaper than big resorts. It is possible to buy lift passes for the resort only or if required passes that include Alpe d'Huez too. This opens up a huge area for skiing. If you want a quiet resort with excellent slopes then this is the place for you.
Recently (Easter 2006) stayed in the Les Bergers area of Alpe D'Huez and found that the link across to Auris was very worthwhile. The slopes on this side of the linked area were very quiet in comparison to the slopes above A D'Huez with some excellent wide reds and a couple of blacks. The resort of Auris is basically a few apartment blocks a ski hire shop and a couple of restaurants. One imparticular was excellent with prices about 40% cheaper than A D'Huez. It is situated beside the ski hire shop that is visible as you ski into Auris and has a fantastic sun terrace with superb views across to Les 2 Alps. I dont think there would be alot to do in Auris if staying for a week but it is definitely worth a visit if skiing in A D'huez for the restaurant and quiet slopes alone.
