Expensive!
Stayed in Tyrol accommodation. Toilet seat broken. One of the electric blankets on double bed not working. Foyer of Tyrol was flooded. Rooms are not serviced daily. I was told by the staff member on duty that they only serviced rooms every 3 days. No safe in rooms.
No wifi in rooms, only at the restaurant. Tyrol is walking distance to the restaurant. But I activated an eSim which solved the wifi problem, and Hotspot-shared it with my family. No TV in Tyrol. No hairdryer and helpful. Must make supper reservations to get a table.
Staff in restaurants, reception and retail stores all very friendly.
Would recommend the ski-ing lesson for beginners, that comes with kit hire, tube rides and bum board rides for the day. Expensive but worth it.
The ski-lift didn't work on the tube/bum board piste, was so the ticket wasn't fully utilized.
The ski-lift on the main ski piste was also not working.
The experience of driving through Lesotho via Sani Pass to Afriski, and then via Katse Dam on the outward journey made Afriski a nice 3 night stop over, but I wouldn't recommend a long stay over due to costs of accomodation and dining, lack of maintenance and lack of connectivity if it's something that is necessary.
But an holiday experience that we are glad we did!
I didn't even make it to the resort but I'd like to review their shocking communication and customer service.
I booked two nights at the resort and after heavy snowfall in Lesotho, I was stuck at my lodge in Semonkong and unable to make the first night of my booking. I emailed Afriski to notify them and enquire about a refund or what the next steps would be, and they replied that no refund was possible. I accepted this but after reading an Instagram post from them stating that the roads to their resort were closed due to the same snowfall, I checked their booking T&C's and saw that it said "Where, and to the extent, it becomes impossible for Afriski to perform or provide the services due to the temporary closure of the resort or for any other reason including Force Majeure, Afriski shall immediately inform the Client of the nature and expected duration of the circumstances." I was never contacted or informed about the situation and after reaching out to them again to inquire about it and remind them of their obligations to me as a client, I never received a response. I still have not been granted the courtesy of a reply which I find incredibly unprofessional and essentially a breach of their policies. I also noticed that their T&C's state that "Afriski shall issue the Client with a voucher to the value of the amount received by Afriski at the time of notice and shall, with the Client, re-schedule the Booking to a suitable future date". This also never happened and still has not happened.
I doubt I will ever receive a response which blows my mind, and even if they did ever get back to me, this unpleasant episode has made me never want to visit their resort. Terrible company and I will go out of my way to tell everyone I know how they treat clients and how unbelievably bad their service is. Book with them at your peril!
Welcome to Afriski where food guest are given expired food. No clean water to drink when the sewage line was spilling into the dam. Sky restaurant kitchen is a mess and dirty.
A disastrous stay: false advertising, rude management, inadequate amenities, and mass exodus of guests.
After driving for six long hours, we were met with disappointment from the very beginning. The booking mistake resulted in assigned rooms that looked nothing like the pictures portrayed.
The stag and general manager's behavior was simply appalling. They were rude, unapologetic, and showed no interest in addressing our concerns. It was as if they couldn't care less about the wellbeing and satisfaction of their guests.
Furthermore, the false advertising became painfully obvious as we discovered the lack of essential amenities. Both Wi-Fi and DSTV were nonexistent, leaving us isolated from the outside world and without any form of entertainment.
The dining experience was a farce. The only restaurant on the premises had little to no food in stock, and the sandwich order we placed took a staggering 1.5 hours to arrive. To our dismay, the sandwiches were barely edible, a complete disappointment.
Our experience was shared by multiple other guests who, like us, left the accommodation early, unable to bear the dismal conditions any longer.
In conclusion, I cannot stress enough how terrible our stay was. The false advertising, rude management, inadequate amenities, and mass exodus of guests paint a clear picture of the utter lack of care and professionalism at this establishment. Avoid it at all costs if you value your time and sanity.
Avoid this place at all costs!
So we've had this family holiday planned, booked and deposit paid well in advance of 6 months or so. Our booking was done under my sister's details, confirmed on more than one occasion just to be sure, and we were told everything was in order and our dates secured, right up until May.
Then, all these bad reviews started popping up on Facebook and all over social media. So to avoid any issues upon arrival this weekend, like so many others had expressed, we decided to confirm just one more time that everything was 100% confirmed.
To our disappointment, the response we received the reception cabin crew was that "unfortunately" our booking was allocated to somebody else. How's that even possible? It was very much confirmed and booked for us for the last 6 months upon every enquiry, but now it was suddenly booked for someone else? When we were set to arrive this weekend? Absolutely pathetic.
Had we not have checked for the 100th time before leaving this weekend, we would have just ended up like all the other families who arrived and found their accommodation being double booked.
Pathetic service, non existent communication.
We had a super time at Afri-Ski. Stayed at Bagpackers (ed: backpackers?) with my wife and daughter. The atmosphere there was great; all got on well which is a lucky draw. The staff at the accommodation were efficient and friendly. The same can be said at the slope and ski rental place. Unfortunately, due to extreme strong winds +_ 60 km/hr the main ski lift could not operate for 2 days.
I think it is fantastic to have skiing available in Africa, within a five hr drive from Johannesburg.
Have just spent 4 days at the resort; had a wonderful time and cannot complain about the snow sports or the staff involved in that side of the resort. Wish I could say the same about the housekeeping staff where we stayed in Vail. Our room was dirty, the bedding on the bed stained and shabby, the bathroom stank of sewage, we had no hot water on one of the mornings, the toilet paper was not replaced, the kettle and hairdryer were both broken, the cupboard had two coat hangers which is ridiculous for winter clothing. Additionally, the restaurants in the resort are exorbitant as they have the monopoly. You have no choice; it's pay or starve!
A really awesome venue to learn to ski or snowboard with excellent teaching facilities. Even if you snowboard, in Europe often, Afriski offers a destination where you are able to focus on your skills without all the "big mountain" fuss. The option of different park runs gave me a chance to learn to rail and jump at my own pace. Something I have not been able to do in 4 trips to Europe. Afriski is a must for all snowboarders and a great destination.
.....also great news & of interest to us skiers & resort visitors: the Lesotho government seems to have acknowledged the increase in tourist traffic from SA by investing in and constructing new customs facilities, by enlarging the "Caledonspoort Border" crossing- alleviating some dreadful bottlenecks- come next winter season!
Lately, SA authorities seem to be getting stricter on passport control- dual citizen must only use their SA passport for crossing! Permanent residents with foreign passports are asked to show their SA ID.
Could only manage one 'spur of the moment' skiing weekend (17/18 Aug-13) this year! Resort always fully booked in winter- used a very 'spartan' Oxbow lodge! (~9 km drive, road deteriorated to gravel but under construction)- the only other option- did not book- but lucky! (DB&B was R 1,460 per couple/night this year). AfriSki's accommodation are all based on 'private investors owned chalets'- rental pool- not resort owned.
Skiing, however, always the main attraction though! Snow & Slope in perfect condition- baby slope is sweet & world class to learn on! Intermediate slope is now separated & super safe! Weather dry, hardly any precipitation & water shortage this season - but lower temperatures- allowing enough snow making! Another great improvement and an enjoyable super weekend! Beware of some near unavoidable potholes on the way inside Lesotho! Big rims & tires an advantage!
@ editor: Seefeld, Maribel, Davos, St. Moritz, Tirol, Vail are just some names describing chalets at Lesotho's AfriSki!
