Terrain Traps and Safety Tips for Spring Skiing

Spring skiing brings a unique beauty to the mountains. Yet, as the snow warms, avalanche danger changes significantly. Understanding this risk is crucial for maximizing safety on the slopes.

The Dangers of Terrain Traps

As temperatures rise in early spring, avalanches remain a very real threat. Warmer temperatures can destabilize the snowpack, leading to melt-freeze cycles that create weak layers. Wet snow avalanches become more common during this time. A key element in avalanche safety is recognizing terrain traps. These are natural features that make an avalanche far more dangerous:

  • Narrow Valley Bottoms: Avalanche debris funnels into these areas with increased force.
  • Cliffs: Falling from a cliff during an avalanche greatly increases injury risk.
  • Trees: Trees can trap skiers, bury them deeper, and make rescue much harder.

Safety Tips for Spring Skiing

With awareness and some key precautions, you can still enjoy the slopes this spring:

  1. Check Avalanche Forecasts: Always research the current avalanche conditions and forecasts for your chosen area. Local resources provide essential updates.
  2. Understand Slope Angles: Slopes steeper than 30 degrees are most prone to avalanches. Learn how to assess a slope's angle before you begin your descent.
  3. Avoid Terrain Traps: If possible, avoid terrain traps. If you must ski through them, do so with extreme caution, one at a time. Where possible, don't ski alone-especially when the risk is elevated.
  4. Always Carry Avalanche Rescue Gear: An avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel are essential tools. Ensure everyone in your group has them and knows how to use them quickly.

Remember: Avalanches Can Happen Anytime

While winter and early spring pose the greatest risk, avalanches can happen throughout the year. Don't let warmer weather lower your guard. Continuous education and awareness will help you stay safe.

EUROPEAN AVALANCHE WARNING SERVICES (EAWS)

The European Avalanche Warning Services (EAWS) is a collaborative network of agencies focused on avalanche safety. They exchange ideas and operational procedures for avalanche forecasting, develop shared standards, and work on improving operational efficiency. EAWS is dedicated to providing effective avalanche forecasting and warning services to reduce loss of life and damage caused by avalanches. Their agreement outlines the standards for membership, governance, and cooperative efforts to enhance public safety regarding avalanches.

Home - EAWS
EAWS is a cooperation between national, provincial or regional agencies in Europe in charge of avalanche warning (services - AWSs).
