Snowfall warning for North Island New Zealand Issued 24 July at 10am local time. A deepening sub-tropical depression will quickly cross North Island on Saturday accompanied by a short period of gales and heavy rain. Expect easterly blizzard conditions to develop on Ruapehu as well as the ranges from the Tararuas to the Kawekas and perhaps even further north. A Cool SE flow with further bands of snow for mountains elsewhere. Many resorts have seen more than 20cm snow over the past 24hrs.

Schladming, in Austria (in the Steiermark region), is a large resort with 25 lifts (8 chair lifts, 15 surface lifts) that offers skiers an incredible 1159 metres (3802 feet) of vertical descent. It is part of the Skiverbund Amade area which includes Reiteralm, Amade, Hochkönig, Großarl and Gastein. Schladming has 25 pistes with a total length of 115 kilometers (72 miles). Schladming is best suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders with some terrain for beginners but little of interest for advanced skiers. There are 250 kilometers (156 miles) of cross country ski trails at Schladming. For snowboarders, there is a terrain park and 3 half pipes. All of the pistes at Schladming are covered by snow-making. The closest airport is at Salzburg and the transfer time is only 1 hours. The nearest train station is in Schladming. Will be returning to Schladming for the third time in January having been there the last two seasons. Have skied France, Switzerland, Canada and many other places in Austria but this place takes some beating. Friendly locals, good food, great ski area with 4 interlinked mountains and a glacier. There was still plenty of skiing, even last year, when the snow in Europe wasn't so good. A variety of hotels and a few more bars in the town have meant that the apres-ski has improved. On the mountain there are plenty of huts and they serve very good food at reasonable prices. Haven't got kids so can't comment on how it rates for families but for anyone else it is a must if going to Austria. Then again, go somewhere else and it will keep the lift queues down and the slopes uncrowded for the wife and I!
