Visitor reviews for Mount Dobson Ski Resort

Spent two days here in 2010. Absolutely amazing, first day was clear, no wind and 40cm of fresh snow. There were no lift lines, few people and fresh tracks to be had all over the mountain. Second day was the same story, bad weather had dumped rain on the other Canterbury fields while Dobson, being a bit higher, again had fresh snow. Lifts are slow and base area is very basic, but personally I would rather have fresh tracks, few people on the field and no lift lines over a pretty cafe, crowds and fast lifts.

This is a large ski field, with an easy access road despite its high altitude. The ski field facilities are basic but adequate. The terrain is spread out over 2 wide sheltered bowls accessed by a triple chair and T-bar. There is a beginners area with rope tow with progression to a Pomma that accesses 2 longer pistes. The one surprise is how few people were up there. The terrain is a match to many of the much better known ski fields. So if you prefer to avoid crowds and waiting on lift queues this is perfect. You also get superb views right over to Mount Cook out on the East trail. In addition,, they had a deal of 2 for 1 lift pass, so it doesn't hurt the pocket! Will definitely be back.

I visited Dobson in July 2005 and had an excellent time! Despite being early in the season and the season itself not being a very strong one what we found at Dobson was beautiful snow and very friendly staff. While other resorts in the area had very icy conditions Dobson had soft powder which was very well mantained. Not all runs were open but the ones that were had excellent snow on than deep powder could be found off-piste. In my experience Dobson is the best in the area and my one regret was that we didn't travel later in the season and enjoy more snow, nonethelss the way Dobson maintained the snow they had has raised the bar for any resort I visit in the future.
