We stayed in Bagni da Lucca which is about 50 minutes drive to Abetone. The resort is an absolute gem and prices about half of the alpine resorts. Skiing and snow conditions were very good and suitable for all but the most demanding expert skiers (limited black runs) We were there in February 2011. We are returning this Christmas and keeping our fingers crossed that there will be snow, as we haven't been at this time of year before. We stayed in a lovely (English owned) house by the river which had lots of nice rooms and was very traditionally modernised......wonderful ! The locals were SOooooo friendly and helpful. Don't ignore this region!
