Scottish Ski Centre Announces Temporary Closure Due to COVID

Hopes that ski areas in Scotland might benefit from a domestic skier boom this winter as skiers look to ski in the UK rather than battle COVID and Brexit restrictions to reach the Alps may be in question after Nevis Range ski area by Ben Nevis announced it will, “temporarily close the business.”

A Statement from the resort says,

“Like many other businesses we have been reflecting on the current situation with COVID-19 and unfortunately we have reached the very difficult conclusion to suspend the sale of Season Tickets for Snowsports and temporarily close the business. With all of the travel restrictions and uncertainty surrounding winter operations we are not 100% confident that we can deliver a full season for you.”

The resort has stressed that it does plan to open if things improve, also saying,

“It’s not all doom and gloom, over the last few years the season has been starting in earnest towards the end of January and we look forward to having an amazing season as soon as the conditions allow. The addition of our snow-making plant will make a huge difference to the new beginners area and we can’t wait to welcome you back to a snowy Nevis Range!”

Other Scottish ski areas responded by stressing they planned to open as usual.

Nevis Range say they are season pass sales for the upcoming season and that anyone who had already bought one could get a full refund. They will also carry over loyalty discounts for all season ticket holders to the 21/22 season.

“Because of the incredible challenges we have faced this year (our trading loss due to COVID-19 was £1m) we are concerned that while there are restrictions in place, we simply would not be able to trade in December and January without losing significant amounts of money, which would put jobs at risk,” the statement continued, concluding,

“We can’t wait to be back open and as soon as we have great conditions and less travel restrictions, we will be back out on the hill with you all! Thank you for all of your support during this really challenging year and we’ll see you on the hill soon!”
