POW UK Launches 'Send It For Climate' Campaign In An Effort To Save Our Slopes From Climate Change

The eco-orientated campaign is part of a movement calling out the UK government and demanding that they bring in new policies that will keep the country on track to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

With the next general election around the corner, outdoor climate action charity POW (Protect Our Winters) UK is using this opportunity to appeal to the UK’s extensive outdoor community by asking them to send virtual postcards outlining policy commitments that the newly elected government must make in order to get back on track to net zero by 2050. These include a promise to end fossil fuel extraction; a transition to renewable energies such as electric and tidal-generated power; more investment into public transport services; increased carbon literacy in government; and more engagement with nature and the outdoor community.

What does the campaign involve?

According to POW UK, the UK government’s climate committee has failed to set goals that will ensure that the UK remains on track to achieving net zero by 2050 and limit the impact of climate change as much as possible. By rallying support from people across the UK and beyond, POW UK hopes to make some noise and find systemic solutions to the climate crisis.

Why should I take part?

Studies have shown that rising temperatures are shortening ski seasons and reducing snowfall, particularly at lower elevations. In the latest environmental news, Swiss glaciers have experienced a staggering loss, with half their mass disappearing in the last 85 years, posing significant challenges to alpine ski resorts. According to a report from Planet Ski, this severe glacial retreat has forced summer ski destinations like Passo Stelvio in Italy and Les 2 Alpes in France to cease operations, while others such as Val d’Isere didn’t open their glacier skiing areas at all due to poor conditions. In response to similar issues, the Presena Glacier in Italy has seen resorts take unconventional measures, such as covering the ice with giant tarps in an effort to slow the melting process, highlighting the drastic actions being taken to combat the impacts of climate change on winter sports. These trends are alarming and underscore the urgent need for climate action to preserve our winter sports and natural ecosystems

Snow-Forecast.com supports POW UK’s mission to fight climate change, recognizing that achieving net zero and stabilizing global snowfall levels are at present uncertain goals, but steps need to be taken to do as much as possible. Meanwhile, we remain dedicated to guiding you to the best snow conditions, from specific countries to mountain ranges and ski resorts.

How do I join in?

POW UK have made it super easy to take part in the campaign, as all you have to do is click on the link below, which will take you through to their website, where you will be able to fill out a virtual postcard outlining the policy commitments needed to get us back on track for net zero carbon emissions by 2050 in order to save our winters and stop climate change- before it causes irreversible damage to mountain ranges and ski slopes. You can find the charity’s campaign asks in their mini manifesto, and once you send the postcard they will deliver it to the relevant ministers. Other ways you can contribute even further to this urgent mission is by sharing the campaign on social media or by making a donation. The more postcards sent, the more likely the proposed party manifestos are to be listened to and therefore turned into policy commitments by the political party elected in the second half of this year.
